March 27th, 2019: AI YI YI
This portrait, titled “Edmond de Belamy”, was put up for auction at Christies New York.
This is a notable sale because the portrait was created by the French collective Obvious, using Artificial Intelligence. Christies forecast $7,000 to $10,000 for the first AI generated piece sold by a major house, but it sold for $432,500. Quote:
close but not identical. AI can create identical copies of this ink of canvas piece like a Xerox machine with diarrhea. Would they all be worth $432,000? How do you know what you’re buying? Quote:

This effort obviously has nothing to do with facial identification research.
If Edmond walked into the room, we would know him by his not having one. |
