Sept 23rd, 2019 : Wanna Buy Some Woods?

Wouldn’t you like to buy a little piece of the woods? A place out in the boondocks where you could escape the hustle and bustle
of reality. A place where you could, even in small chunks, find peace? That’s it, a piece for peace!
This piece in Northern California is 530 acres (215 Hectares) of mostly trees, that’s a good thing right?

They are pretty big trees, Sequoias, almost 500 of the more than six feet (183 cm) in diameter. One was 500 years old during
the Trojan Wars. One called the Stagg Tree is believed to be the 5th biggest tree in the world.
Talk about a cool place to get away from it all, then back to reality on Monday morning like the people with no woods.
But think of the bragging rights for the workweek. Moi? why I think I’ll mosey out to MY woods this weekend.
All the night clubs and Gyms are so crowded, unlike MY woods, maybe I'll cut down a tree for exercise.
You could be the most hated person at work.

There is one tiny fly in the ointment. Since this is the last large section of the old growth Sequoias in private hands, a bunch of
damn do-gooders have made an offer to buy it. They want to buy it and give it to the government, even signed the papers... but
they don’t have the $15 million. I figure while they are out begging you could sneak in and snatch it right out from under them.

So, you wanna buy some woods?

I've hiked to that tree; myself and four or five friends went there last fall. I wouldn't call it "northern" California though - the nearest city is Porterville. It's definitely Central California; and around here we tend to think of ourselves as more Southern California than Northern.

Although really, we don't have much in common with either. We're really more Western, Western Nevada if anything.

FWIW, I met the Rouch family on that trip; they were having a family gathering that weekend. Got to chat with them some. Nice people.

From 3,000 miles away anything above San Jose would be northern and vise versa. But most people living there, like people everywhere, would divide by culture rather than geography. Forgive my telescopic view, we're always happy to be corrected by someone more familiar, so thanks for helping out.

Mighty oaks from little acorns grow, but:

I brought a couple of their little cones home years ago and remain astounded at how small the seeds that soon fell out were.

Can you lend me $16 million? I'm a little thin this month.

With the way things are going these days, I'd be very worried what the government would do with these woods.

Why, that would be a great place for a strip mine.

Pave paradise and put up a parking lot.

And charge a fee. A nice, big, fat fee.

Can ya just make someplace a federal park?

Is a federal park and a Nat'l Park the same thing?

I don’t think so. A National Park is a federal park, but a federal park can be any number of things, like forest service land, BLM land, historic park, etc.

If you can afford to buy that property and spruce it up, surely you can afford a couple congress critters to pull strings.
