Just for grins I ran some numbers using the Taylor Knock Out Factor formula comparing the .308, .22LR standard velocity, and a one ounce lead ball .75" dia. shot at an average speed of 75mph or 109fps

.308 = TKO of 18
.22 = TKO of 1
1oz sling = TKO of 5

But as you say, actually hitting the target would be a prerequisite.

Cool chart. Another reason that LEO's changed to the .40 S&W I would guess. Interesting also the power of the 45-70. I always have kept that on my short list of guns to get next.

Years ago when I was a Young Sprat , a Friends Grand dad Broke out his trap door spring field in .45-70, he Boomed with it a few times , then asked if we wanted to , my friend said NOOOOO !! So Of corse I HAD to give it a try , that damn thing Kicked SOO Hard it sat me down and left my shoulder bruised for a week !!!
I have a smaller version of Pretty much the same rifle in .44 mag , Wounderfull Little Boomer !!!
