Aug 13, 2009: Morakot

Typhoon Morakot tore through Taiwan doing most of the damage from heavy rains (100 inches) rather than high winds.
Mudslides and raging rivers destroyed many towns, killing over a hundred people.

Fortunately this hotel was evacuated before it tipped over.

Many more pictures here.

the weirdest thing is that up here in the north of the island - which, for the record, is kinda tiny - there was very little damage or flooding. just a couple of overturned plants, a couple branches down, a sign or two blown around... really pretty wussy up north. its jus down south where it was intense, and all the damage i'm hearing about is from the rain up in the mountains (seven feet, in places... thats a LOT of rain.)

People always think "big dangerous winds" - It's always the water that kills with hurricanes.

Perfect place for a farmers market. Just add a railroad track.

They should've known something was up. Look at all those tombstone-shaped windows...

Why I don't understand is, if it's a brick building, why is everyone yelling "timber"?

I saw this hotel falling in the news last week. Spectacular stuff, but devastating.

That's because water tends to naturally flow downward. Down south is always more prone to floods and up north is always safer.

That video gives me shivers. Though no one was in it, I felt bad for the building!

I wonder if it had any little buildings that will be orphans now?

So that's where those little sheds come from that are out front of the Home Depot!
