Jan 5th, 2016: British Drunks

For some reason drunks lying in the streets on New Years Eve warms the cockles of British hearts. It must be a deep rooted thing like hearing Auld Lang Syne, because thousands wiped away a nostalgic tear and lauded this photograph on the Manchester Evening News website.

Now the drunk getting cuffed by the cops is already getting an earful from the red dress, imagine what he'll suffer when he gets home tomorrow.
The hookers and ne'er do wells on the far corner seem to be entertained, and I think the photobomber on the left is contemplating stealing the beer.
The chick behind the red dress facing the cop must be singing God Save The Queen, because the cop in the center is saluting.

On twitter someone extoled the composition(or crop) as perfect because it fits the Fibonacci sequence.
One tweety reproduced it in watercolor, and yet another in oil.

Then for reasons beyond me, they started posting tweeting photoshops of the drunk with the blue jacket in famous paintings, and landscapes, like he's a national hero. Curiouser and curiourser

There is nothing new under the sun...

Gin Lane by William Hogarth 1751.

There continues to be comment in the press about the Manchester photo.

From this morning's Daily Telegraph:

Quote:
Hannah Kirby, who is wearing a red dress in the photo, explained to the Manchester Evening News that two of her friends were floored in a scuffle, with one of them snapped appearing to be relaxing on the road while reaching for a beer.

“[On New Year’s Day] my dad rang and said I was in one of the photos. I went to look on the website and I couldn’t believe it. Hilarious!” she told MEN.

“He wasn’t casually chilling and reaching for his beer. There was a bit of commotion went on and he was knocked over but managed to save his bottle of beer.”

Referring to the other man appearing to be restrained by police officers, she added: “He didn’t get arrested, he was fine in the end.”

Very much doubt those lasses are hookers, Bruce.

Heh. Very good.

That looks like a typical Manc taxi rank at New Year. And those girls look like typical New Year revellers in dress and demeanour appropriate to Manchester city centre.

I think a lot of Americans might find British city centres- and indeed town centres, which are sometimes worse - a bit of a shock at weekends and during holidays. Very much not in line with notions of Brits as polite, restrained or repressed. I avoid them like the plague on Friday and Saturday nights.

One time I walked through Halifax town centre on a Friday night there was a young lass being half dragged along the ground by her mates because she was drunk and had decided to lie down in the middle of the road. There were what i can only describe as roving bands of young people catcalling each other from opposite sides of the main road, and some lads hanging out of windows of apartments above shops shouting lewd suggestions and someone else being violently sick in a shop doorway.

It is also a strange paradigm in the Uk that the further North, and therefore the colder, you get the less clothes are worn when out on the piss. I don't know why this is. I do know that the sight of young women in teeny tiny dresses and very little else is a common one even in the depths of winter. I also know I was one of them once. Shivering my way through the first pubs on the crawl, waiting for the alcohol to kick in and warm me up.

*shrugs*

No mystery Dana, we're old, sidelined by both media and commerce who are slobbering over the youth market.
Hey, get off my lawn ya whippersnappers.

This is supposed to be from the CIA factbook. Unfortunately, even enlarging it I couldn't read the number for England. Google tells me the median age of the UK is 40.0

That still doesn't explain gossamer mini skirts, bare legs and spaghetti-strap heels in Manchester in December.

I have no problem with it from a moral perspective - I just think they must be fucking freezing.

I love, by the way, her explanation of her mate being pushed down, but managing to save his beer. Heh. Priorities, man.

The map originally comes, so far as I can tell, from this page, which includes enlargements of the various continents so you can read the numbers more clearly.

Having said that, said page is full of annoying adverts, so I'm just reposting said enlargements here... :-P

According to this source anyway, UK is 40.4.

(Edit: Huh, those images are bigger than I anticipated. Apologies if they're a little overwhelming...)

Hence Merkel's open-door policy: Syria (23.3), send me (46.1) some of your young people.

New Years Eve there's a lot of potential on the streets, but there's also a lot of competition. It pays to advertise so they gotta flash the flesh to be successful. Besides their pimp has their coat over in the warm parked car.
The Gulf Stream is a hookers friend.
