So could you describe to me exactly what configuration of the materials you think you're looking at?

I use this for a very specific activity that I'm waiting for somebody to think of.

does it involve scoring a game or keeping track of changing data?
Is it used for plotting points? Is the circular shape critical to its function?

It's a sheet of Ghostlines poster board, with 1" grid marked off, double-sided taped to the bottom of a 20" diameter piece of table glass. The glass is round because that is what I had on hand. I would have prefered a larger, rectangular piece of table glass.
I draw on the glass surface with dry erase markers; the grid serves as a guide/measure for the dimensions of the drawing. What is it? It is used in a game. The game is played on a 1" grid. Any ideas? It's not Battleship.

Yes, it is a homemade "battlemat" for staging Dungeons & Drangons encounters. Glatt wins again.
I've been going on Saturday nights to a D&D group at an old, dear friend of mine's house. We bring the kids (he and his wife have similar-aged kids) and they have a movie watching slumber party while the adults relive our nerdy youths around the dining room table. Our awesome, nerdy wives play with D&D with us. We play the new 4e (4th Edition) D&D, which incidentally is not produced TSR anymore, but Wizards of the Coast, who is now owned by Hasbro. I suppose this is akin to some earlier generation's playing of Bridge or some such activity.

I was DM (Dungeon Master) in a few encounters, which means I was in charge of the environment and the enemies. Here is a cave with various outlets of questionable use. The cave is spotted with a flamable fungus, identified as such using a "Knowledge Check" of the "Nature" skill--that is, our best "Nature" oriented character rolled a twenty-sided die, added their "Nature" modifier, and compared the resulting sum to a table of difficulties. By meeting the required difficulty of the Knowledge Check, they were able to warn the other party members: that stuff is flammable! Good to know when a Fire Bat was swooping at you, and the ghost of a Goblin who died in a volcanic vent is trying to possess you and force you into it.
