It's more important than length, except in things like socks. And skulls.

A buddy of mine was at a yardsale a little while back and got this totally awesome Cheerwine cooler. I think it's cool as hell. (Not really sure why...)

Why is this pissing me off? He won't, will not, sell me this cooler. I made him offers up to $20. No sale.

He paid 50 fucking cents for this cooler.

Admittedly, it's not a full-sized cooler, but you could have a clock. Or an umbrella. Or lip balm!

A can of coke burst in my backpack today, and my new book from my favorite UK author is all but ruined. I've dried it out but it's trashed. What's really pissing me off is that I have put it in a plastic bag to protect it from exactly this circumstance every other day... but not today. ....and the coke poured down the back of my legs and soaked my jeans and it was -12C plus windchill

Why are tins so weak and shoddy? there's a frickin' 10c deposit on them to make sure they get returned and recycled.

Cost of aluminum and cost of shipping. I saw some numbers about the big boys like coke and pepsi, who have gone to ultrathin cans. The money they save on shipping is just incredible.
I was pushing a loaded two wheel handtruck around the distributors, and they had cases of pepsi 6-packs with the plastic wildlife traps, in low cardboard flats, stacked about 5 ft high along the aisle. The handtruck had cute little angle iron fenders welded above each wheel that I managed to slice through about 4 cases of cans before I noticed my ankles getting sprayed.

If you'll forgive a little cross threading....

The bad news is the freezer died, taking a full load of once-frozen food with it.

The good news is the garbage can that I wheel to the street every week fits through the back door.

Dunno 'bout Mitch Egan, but in Vermont the original reason for a deposit was to keep the roads clear of litter. Back in 1979, I think a nickel had the equivalent buying power of $27.95 today. Give or take a few bucks.

(actually, it would be about equal to a 25 cent deposit today)

This.

It was a big deal when it passed in Maine.

It's the main source of income for homeless (winos) around here. I always used to give them the benefit of the doubt that the alcohol stink was from the cans they had collected, but now I work in a store and encounter then every morning I'm unlucky enough to need to be near the registers, I know my faith was misplaced

The problem with can deposits is the cans have to be returned intact so the bar code can be read. That takes up way too much room.
