Hi, and thanks for the welcome, xoxoxoBruce, morethanpretty & monster!

To answer your question, monster, the Big Boss Administrator, who has taken a back seat approach to Administration for the past 10 years, suddenly decided to be more hands-on, and in doing so, enacted some new rules that really, really sent the community into a tizzy. When we tried to explain to him why these changes would fundamentally alter the atmosphere throughout all the forums, he basically said he didn't care one whit how we felt, and even if he was making the biggest mistake of his career, so be it, he'd go find a job at McDonald's or Starbucks if his bosses weren't happy with it. Oh, and by the way, if we didn't like it, "[we'd] save [him] a lot of trouble if [we] go somewhere else."

So about 1,000 of us did. I know this because that's the number of people who have registered at 2 new boards that have been created by unhappy, long-term members (it's actually more than that, but there is some overlap in membership).

Interestingly enough, I just checked back there because I'm still getting Private Messages from friends, and found he had posted a personal apology to ME! Wow. I'm kind of stunned.

Biggest mistake of his career? Was it a paying job then?

Nice to meet you Jill

Welcome Jill [yes I am trying to dispel the myth that we are wary of noobs, but it's still a welcome so hey-ho]

You know what?
I was reading back through the Aylesbury thread I made.
Quite often I go there just to check what I have already taken pictures of. Before going out and possibly duplicating them. But a proper read shows so much appreciation and interest.

I'm used to that for other Dwellars. I've posted it myself. But to have it in a thread that I have created and I maintain - wow, it's wonderful. And it makes me appreciate - more than ever - what UT does here. And Bruce and Wolf of course.

Jill, you seem like a spunky kinda gal (in the Australian meaning). If you like it here, do ask your friends in too. We like intelligent posters. And indecent ones.

Don't be so sure you're wrong. As a matter of fact, he does know a lot of very personal things about me because many years ago I responded to a survey for an article he was writing. Hmmmmm. . .

Yes. The message boards sprung (and grew) from discussions related to a column he's been writing for more than 30 years.

Nice to meet you, too, Dana!

Thanks, Sundae Girl!

I have mentioned this place to a few friends, but our old board is in so much chaos right now, with not one but two spin-off boards people are going to, I'm not sure how many (if any) I'd be successful coaxing over here. I suspect that at least one of them already belongs here, as it was actually a poster from our forums who listed this site in a thread where someone asked about other message boards that might have the same feel with intelligent and smart-assed posters that isn't filled with l33t and "I know you are but what am I?" type posts.

And a lot more will see a link to here I included in the post that the administrator responded to with his apology. I highlighted some of the more pertinent lines from the FAQs here, as well as the fact that y'all have existed for more than 10 years with only 3 common-sense rules. So perhaps it will please you that your board may have played some role in our board receiving an apology that many have been clamoring for. Go You!

Almost 20 years now. 2010 sees the 20th year for the cellar (though I believe that includes its earlier BB incarnation).

Welcome, Jill.

I think you'll fit in fine here.
