Even when deer die of old age, or being hit by a car they are still food for somthing. Road kill YUMMMMM!!!

I wasn't thinking the ammo was for something like a deer. More along the lines of some mythical creature. Not so grand as a unicorn or pegasus but certainly somekind of centaur or valkries. Something born of fancy and whimsy.

We have lots of deer around here. Right in the city. I think they are smarter than us drivers. We havn't hit one yet.

Yes, the deer were here first. So were their natural predators – the wolf and the cougar. Man has eradicated the wolf from the lower 48 except for the upper Michigan penninsula. Cougars have been hunted heavily, but their population is now making something of a come back.

Without their natural predators to keep the deer population in check, their numbers have sky rocketed and they present a real menace on this nation's highways.

Some fun facts:

The number of deer-vehicle crashes around the country continues to grow. Conover et al. (1995) estimated over 1.5 million deer-vehicle crashes occur annually in the United States. Less than 50% of these collisions are reported. For reported accidents, the estimated damage to vehicles exceeds $1.1 billion and over 1.3 million deer are killed. Romin and Bissonette (1996) estimated that the value of a deer harvested by a hunter was $1,313. Applying this estimate to the number of deer killed that occur in the United States would result in an economic opportunity loss of over $1.7 billion annually.

In addition to these economic losses, deer-vehicle collisions alone result in over 29,000 human injuries and over 200 fatalities (Conover et al. 1995). And the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate. When Henry Ford was first turning out the Model T, only about 500,000 white tails were to be found in the entire U.S., according to the U.S. Biological Survey. In recent times, deer populations have increased from 29.8 million in 1994 to 32.7 million in 2001. Last year, hunters killed 7.4 million deer, drivers killed another 1.8 million, Tragically, DVCs kill more people in the U.S. than do all commercial airlines, train and bus accidents combined in a typical year.

But it is a reality check on a pullulating U.S. highway hazard. Deer-vehicle crashes in 2003 produced 367 human fatalities. Even for survivors, an encounter with a leaping stag takes a toll: The University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center cites a 1995 study claiming that the property damage from such accidents that year was $1.2 billion.

Deer danger on U.S. highways is reaching epidemic proportions. Take Michigan: The state has an estimated 1.75 million white-tailed deer, and when mating season rolls around, they literally take to the streets. The costs, in life and property, prompted Gov. Jennifer Granholm to declare October "Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month."

We can foster the protection of the cougar and re-introduce wolves, for one thing. I was nearly killed in a collision with an elk and spent two weeks in the ICU and was a year recovering from my injuries. A friend of mine in western Colorado was also seriously injured in a crash with a deer. When I lived in the small town of Nucla in western Colorado, I know of two people who were killed by highway encounters with deer. The road from Telluride to Naturita, Colorado (about 60 miles) is sheer terror to drive from 3:00 in the afternoon on. It consists of many blind curves and encounters with deer around everyone of them. I hit deer twice on this road and once did a complete 360 as a result of the collision and was almost hit by a large coal truck barreling down the road from the opposite direction. In both these incidents, the deer bounded off into the hills, apparently none the worse for wear.

Humans have only been around about 40,000 years, and maybe we've got another 5,000 years under the sun, if that. Neither humans or the deer are gonna make it, regardless of our encroachment.

It is not the fault of the deer that the roads travel through their territory.

You believe deer should be killed you must also believe that when you travel where they live it is at your own risk and your choice of where you drive.

Blame mankind mari, not the deer.

I take not pitty either on those who hike, jog or what not through cougar territory and get attacked. Those made a choice, just as I do when we hike.
