I had the most startling experience last night. I was watching television and SonofV was sitting next to me. During a break in the program, a blurb about another program came on. The blurb was about the Mardi Gras celebration, and of course, the contrast with the effects of Hurricane Katrina. He wasn't interested in the coverage of the parades, but his attention was snagged by the phrase "Hurricane Katrina". He looked at me with a look of frustrated puzzlement on his face and said "Hurricane Katrina, I thought we didn't have to think about that anymore." I was stunned.

I know that our in-home news headlines have been dominated by The Quest. It's true that focus of attention has moved away from the devastation of the storm, and the crying need so many people still have. We don't talk about it every day. But.

The innocent and honest expression struck me. How typical. How real. How wrong. Despite the fact that the "story" is soooo yesterday, the reality is just as tangible today as it was when it was in yo face news. I reckon his reaction is very common, and I know it's very sad. We had a short conversation about what's happening there and why it's still important, why we "still have to think about it."

I am not criticizing SonofV. I applaud his honesty and candor. I respect those qualities by demonstrating them toward him. Nor do I criticize the readers of this thread. But I think he spoke the words many here may have thought. And so I respectfully offer that the hurt and suffering happening *today* (two months past the previous post) is just as pressing as it was the day of the storm. The needs may be different (ice futures are down, building materials futures way up), but there are still people with needs. Please don't forget them, please don't turn your back or close your heart. Being needy and being undramatic is a tough combination, but being forgotten and ignored is the kiss of death. We still do have to think (and act) when it comes to the people who need our help.

I just saw a news report the other night about how the Red Cross had collected 2 BILLION dollars earmarked for Katrina relief, much of which hasn't been spend.
What's the daily interest on 2 billion?
