On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L&J Company of Addison, Texas, ran out of fuel and crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi, near the end of its flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash. Twenty others survived.

before changing the name of their act to Sonny and Cher. Their union lasted 12 years.

1969, Muddy Waters was seriously injured in a car crash in Champagne, Illinois. Three people were killed in the accident.

1975, After releasing the single and album Born To Run, Bruce Springsteen had the rare honor of simultaneous covers



on both Time and Newsweek magazines in the US.

1980, Former T Rex member Steve Took,



choked to death on a cherry stone, after some magic mushrooms he had eaten, numbed all sensation in his throat, he was 31.

1980, Mark David Chapman bought a five-shot .38 special for $169. Six weeks later he used it to kill John Lennon.

1956 – Elvis Presley



receives a polio vaccination on national TV. This single event is credited with raising immunization levels in the United States from 0.6% to over 80% in just six months.

November 20, 1946 - October 29, 1971

On October 29, 1971, while the band was on a break from touring and recording, Duane Allman was riding his Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle at high speed on Hillcrest Avenue, in the western part of Macon, GA. As he approached Bartlett Street, a flatbed truck carrying a lumber crane stopped suddenly in the intersection, forcing him to swerve sharply. He struck either the back of the truck or the ball on the lumber crane and was thrown from the motorcycle, which landed on top of him and skidded another 90 feet with him pinned underneath it, crushing his internal organs. He was alive when he was brought to a hospital, but despite immediate medical treatment, he died several hours later from massive internal injuries.

My dad watched a guy on a motorcycle lose his leg in a moderate-speed accident that was not the motorcyclist's fault. He was sitting at the intersection on his own motorcycle as he watched it happen. And that's when he decided to get rid of his motorcycle.

1992 - Ozzy Osbourne announced his retirement from touring after a gig in California, saying "Who wants to be touring at 46?"

On this date in 1991 the music world lost both Freddie Mercury (age 45), lead singer for Queen, and Eric Carr (age 41), drummer, at the time, for KISS.

Mercury died from complications from AIDS, while Carr passed from cancer, with tumors invading his heart and lungs.

Also dying on this date, in 1993, was Albert Collins, blues guitarist times 10, also from cancer.
