The NYTimes article sort of glosses over it, but I read somewhere else that the actual illness she has (a specific mitochondrial disorder which, unlike the generic diagnosis of "autism," is well-known and established in the medical literature) should not be classified as autism, and never has been until this recent public fascination with it. Which is not to say that the vaccine wasn't responsible for aggravating the condition (which the panel did admit, which is why they are agreeing to compensate the family,) but it's not the same situation as all other autism spectrum disorders.
