It's different because I was speaking of the blind guy in the world of no science, and you're referring to now.

There are many, many factors that can prevent a couple from having children which aren't passed on genetically (sterilization from some disease, smoking too much weed, seeing Rosie O'Donnell nude, radiation exposure)... your argument only applies to a minority of all cases. Moreover, your later comment, if properly applied, sort of nulls your argument anyway:

Absolutely agreed. I'm talking about genetics, and the manipulation of medical science to make people procreate who cannot otherwise due to genetic factors.

I don't think people should have more kids than they can afford. But people who can afford the heroic measures are not going to have trouble affording to raise a kid or a whole litter. It's terrifically expensive to do even once and the success rate means you likely have to do it a bunch of times (~25% IIRC).

My wife and I didn't have to go through 'in vitro', but did need help. I've got two wonderful girls out of the deal and wouldn't give them up for the world.

In the end it all comes down to "does an action leave the world in a better or worse place?" If your friends want and can afford kids, -- and can afford the medical stuff, I can't see why it would bother you at all.

If the real issue, as Jinx hinted, is that the problem really has to do with sharing a vacation, that's a whole other thing. I can understand that you guys would be disappointed, but if you've had an easy time conceiving your kids, you have no idea how big an issue it can become when you want kids and are worried that you can't have them. Everything revolves around the issue until it is resolved.

On the other hand, are they sticking you with the bill for the cabin? That would not be cool.
as far as vacation goes, i'm pissed about it, but it doesn't have anything to do with the question i asked. As far as the bill goes....instead of it being split 3 ways, we'd have to pay half if we can't replace them. AND if we do get a replacement, and they don't get preg, then we'd have 4 families going and a crowded house. I think we're just going to boot them and switch our reservation to a smaller house that we can split 2 ways.

~fertilization~
I said up front that my position WAS gut-feel based, and I hadn't thought it through yet. this thread has definitely altered my view. I'm fine with assisted fertilization as long as one of the following is true:

~ the problem is resultant from a specific problem with one of the parents and can be fixed.

~the genetics of the parents are not the cause of the infertility

~the cost is borne soley by the parents

~the parents don't, upon multiple artificial fertilization, take the position that it is god's will that they should bring all of the kids to term.(and then wind up on Ricky Lake)

~the parents are not related to April in any way

~the parents don't pee in the shower

~sorry, it's late

Multiple births? What a nightmare. If I woke up and found out I'd just delivered a litter I'd run away.

There's a reson some people shouldn't be parents. Wonder if the fertility clinics ever take that into consideration?

I doubt it. Not if they can pay the tab for the drugs and follow up care, anyway.

Any idiot can have a baby (note please, that I don't say "become a parent." Parenting is a skill. Reproduction is often an accident). And despite what you hear, you have to be truly incompetent to have a child removed from your custody.

But responsible, stable, employed, intelligent people get investigated down to their undershorts to adopt.

What's wrong with being kind to dumb animals?
Just kidding Juju, you may be an animal but certainly not dumb.
