He doesn't look too happy. They tried to do that on Mythbusters.

It is, for a second. He goes through the fence.

The Bear Hunters is a cute cartoon, but the banner ads on the site are NSFW.

If you haven't seen Katt Williams, you should.
The language is very NSFW.

This large video file (80MB) shows how hand engraving of printing plates is done at G. Henle Verlag, a well-known German publisher of classical music.

That's very impressive, Steve, but why, other than snob appeal, go to that trouble?

You got me. I can't believe it can't be done digitally in less time these days, even with some kind of high-end custom solution. Especially since they really only print one master off the plate and then camera it. Having said that, I've played off many of their scores, and they look DAMNED good. It's a pain to try to read off music that looks like shit; in extreme cases it can be hard to figure out which note it is without looking twice, and you just don't need that. So while I've got to think there's a better way to do it these days, I really do appreciate the end product.

Also please note that that plate he was working on was lead. A lot of people on the Finale (music processing software) mailing list that Mrs. Dallas got this off of were speculating about the health impact.

Carving the lead shouldn't be a problem unless he gets slivers in his skin. Anything that makes dust like sanding can be dangerous, as is not washing his hands before eating, drinking or smoking.

I thought it might be tin or an alloy like solder.

Didn't watch the vid but most egraving or etching is done on zinc or copper plates. As far as I know. Even those harder metals lose detail after a certain number of prints are made. Hence, numbering editions, lower number implies greater fidelity to the original.

After the plate deteriorates to the point that the artist (or print puller) feels sufficient detail is lost the plate is "struck" (defaced) and no more prints can be pulled.

And as for lead, let's not forget our favorite: melting sinkers in the saucepan in the kitchen.

I'm watching the vid now. I think the narrator is mistaken about the lead. The plate he's engraving, the shavings coming off, don't look like lead to me, unless, as bruce points out, it is an alloy.

Pretty cool.

Isn't money engraved on steel plates?
I guess lead would make sense for a single print.
