I keep having to do a slight mental adjustment each time the subject of 'public schools' comes up

In England, a public school is a private school, they are synonymous. What Americans call a 'public' school, we call a state school.

If someone used the term 'state school' around here, I'd assume it was a euphemism for juvenile detention.
