I was trying to imagine why anyone would bother adding eye reflections, but maybe it's precisely because studio lighting gives a weird, unnatural eye reflection? Enough to make people feel "off" about it, but not be able to explain why?

On one of Stephen Colbert's book covers, the eye reflections were tiny, almost imperceptible eagles. I always thought it was strange, that someone would decide to make the effort to put that little detail in there, but if it were already standard practice to fix the eye reflections, so you knew you were going to have to choose something...

Maybe it's like an easter egg? Most of the eye reflections I've looked at showed the studio light set up. Well that is to say I only look when I am trying to figure out the lighting set up and look for clues in the catch lights.

Wow. out of curiosity I googled catch lights. It apparently IS a common practice. I linked to search resluts.

Awesome. You learn something new every day. I wikid catch lights and found this interesting little snippet:

Quote:
Audiences usually perceive eyes without specular highlights to be lifeless or evil, and for this reason many cinematographers specifically eliminate catch lights on antagonistic characters.
Imma so look out for that now.

When I was a gaffer and photo assistant I remember a lot of agonizing over getting a catch light in someone's eyes and the fussing around with a surprisingly small light at bizarre angles to set a catch light.

That was back when we had to carry our gear through the snow, uphill, to the shoot and back. But we were happy in those days, even though we were poor...

I saw Original Mr Commercial Guy in a commercial today! It happened so fast that I forgot to notice what commercial it was.

He's still at it, good for him.
