In addition to the cues and nuances, try reading both paragraphs below. Most people can read the first one much faster. Lowercase letters have more distinctive shapes, which aids the speed of reading. This is obviously dependent on font.

When I first came to the Cellar, a couple people jumped all over me for typing my posts in caps. It just looked better on my screen, but evidently those that have been in the web culture a long time are highly offended by it. They read it as shouting.
I guess because of the limitations of print, in expressing emotions and nuances, they're looking for clues to intent. That makes caps, smilies(sp), punctuation and stuff, much more important than it would appear to, we casual users. Netiquette?

Good point. I never noticed that before. Maybe that's because at that time my posts rarely exceeded two lines.

HR&I question

Does anyone know a cement worker who can give me a guesstimate on how much it would cost me to have a cement slab poured in my basement? It's about 28 ft square and needs to be about two inches deep to smooth out the imperfections in the floor now.

I'm tired of trying to find a thousand pinholes through which water is being forced and flooding my basement. The original slab looks like it was done by a mad Hungarian with palsy using nothing but a bucket, a hose and a trowel.

All I'm looking for is a guess so I know what ballpark I'm playing in.

Thank you.

Brian

if water is seeping in and flooding the basement, you want a french drain and a sump pump, not a new slab.

You volunteering to install one? I for one do NOT wish to chisel out a channel around the slab and then dig a 12x12 hole for the pump, and THEN knock a hole in the foundation for the discharge hose, then fill it again. I think it'll be easier to have a slab poured.

This will also fill the uneven pouring, cover the cracks, and fill the holes where they appeared to run out of concrete. Then any water that gets in will run to the drain I already have instead of puddling on the other side of the basement.
