Actually, UT is the only real poster on this board. He is schizophrenic and we are his personalities.

Among your many positive qualities is a bit of mystery. Thankfully, this falls into that category.

Finish this post with the ending of your choice:

As a turtleneck, it suits you perfectly. But you have it on upside down.

Whether Jeb's story is the truth or not, I think Jeb is right in this respect. There's a lot of mean-spiritedness and one upmanship floating around the Cellar these days. It's the main reason I don't spend much time here these days.

It seems I can't resist putting my two cents in from time-to-time, though. So I compromise by skipping the inane and mean threads.

like this one?

I guess i should point out that its really shitty to post an i'm leaving thread and try to lay it at the feet of a particular person. especially in this case, where you're flagrantly lying.

most people are sitting back.....biding time....waiting for more info. not sure of whether or not they should belive jeb, or lj. maybe some believed me when i said he was my sockpuppet(he's not. i was lying to suxx)but most are carefully riding the fence here. mayhap, we'll never know.....but if one thing is reliable about I'm leaving threads......the author WILL be back to read it.

I never said it was "OK." I was pointing out that it wasn't unprovoked. But yes, the "he started it" defense doesn't work.

To be forthright, I think part of the reason I didn't find LJ's initial comment all that shocking or bad is that when I was in college years ago, my buddies and I used to make "your mother" jokes to each other often. It was acceptable and didn't mean anything other than a joke. So to me, there's nothing bad in his joke. I also only found it mildly amusing for the same reason. I'd heard all the "your mother" jokes already. The second comment he made, after the WTC bit was something I'd never heard before, so that's probably why I found it to be shockingly funny. It was so over the top I had to laugh.

It seems clear that it had a greater impact on others here, and I accept that. I also wish I hadn't brought it up, because LJ is perfectly capable of defending himself, if he even wants to.

The Cellar has had a bit of a bad vibe lately, but I don't think this incident is a good example of it.

Initially, like glatt, I assumed that it was a lie--standard response to a "yo mama" joke. I myself have used this response, complete with believable tears and running out of the room, because it's funny as all shit to watch people backpedal in panic.

With the poem, and now this grand demonstration of a thread, I think it probably is true, but that doesn't really change the way things played out for me. Theotherguy said it all:

It comes up again and again here that some people are allowed to be mean, and others are not. It's not true, because there is a difference in the intent of each person's meanness. Recently lumberjim went off on a tangent about me hypothetically pissing my pants. He wasn't being mean. He was being funny, and I laughed, and responded with more humor.* But I guaran-fucking-tee you if he'd made the crack to, say, skysidhe, all of a sudden half the people on here would be going on about how mean he is. The truth is, he teases people he likes, and he "gets away with it" because he's been here long enough that most of us know his personality.

*In truth, I honest-to-God considered a response along the lines of, "Dude, I wet my pants at the WTC! NOT COOL!" but I figured it wasn't worth it to fan the flames.

There is nothing dictating people's behavior here according to an arbitrary, conspiratorial system.
