IMO, we should make our own... a surprise, from time-to-time.
Not something to make corporations a wad of jack on their made-up holiday.
Even better, every day should be Valentine's day.

I wont be spending v-day with Army dude, but I bought him a groovy Bath Robe , since he was quite taken with the ones from the Hotel.

Jinx - that menu does look awesome for Valentine's Day.

I'm single and I hate Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is a day designed to make single people miserable. The only people who seem to care about single people on Valentine's day are those who are trying to make money off them.

Valentine's Day is overrated anyway. It is primarily a marketing-driven gift occasion that falls between Christmas and Easter. While this does not diminish the genuine feelings of people who do something to mark the occasion, one must not be lured into the marketing hype.

I prefer the idea of surprise gifts. Don't underestimate the value of a bunch of flowers or other romantic gifts at random times. One shouldn't have to wait until Valentine's Day to give a gift that shows your love.

You know, I've spent many years where I've been single on valentines day. I've always felt that people who love each other don't need to have valentines day just to show their love.

I'd like to point out that those of us who do choose to do something special on that particular day are not suggesting that it's the only day they do special things for their lover.

Also, not everything people do on valentines day in order to do so costs a lot of money. For one thing, I don't think I've ever bought a valentines card, but that's just me. I'm sure it's different for everyone.

Usually the people I hear say, "It's all just commercial anyway, it's a money making scam" are men. A male friend of mine in a long term relationship would grumble about it every year, and yet it meant a lot to his partner.

Every year I would point out that neither he nor his partner were Christian and yet he was more than happy for her to lavish special love, care, presents and food on him and his family at this time of year...

This morning the ads on the radio were all aimed at the men. They suggested beest should buy me a romantic gift of.... one half of a pair of cellphones sharing minutes, a digital camera phone, diamond jewellery, a another phone, a love song cd -special price at HALLMARK when you buy 3 cards (

wife, mistress, secret gay lover?), more diamond jewellery, sex toys (no doubt with a built in cellphone), Vermont Teddy Bear (yes, please, I'd like to order the bear on the phone, does it come with any free minutes?) ......

GO AWAY. How romantic is a freaking cellphone? Why do I need another? "Darling, I remember when we met all those years ago, and you spent the whole of our first date on the phone to your best friend. This year, I got you a little something to help us rekindle that romance.... "

St. Hallmark Day for sure.

Neither of us are into elaborate planning or spending a bunch of money, and the only reason I do anything at all is because I like to show her I'm thinking of her. And to get laid.
