Does this sound liberal or conservative?:

"don't tax me. More money in my pocket"
"I shouldn't have to pay for other people's welfare, social security, or medicare. More money in my pocket"
"don't regulate my business - I want all the profits, and if my employees get hurt or sick, or if residents around my factory suffer, I don't care, as long as I'm raking in the dough"
"there shouldn't be a minimum wage - if I can get away with paying someone to work for $1.00/hour, I should be allowed to. More in my pocket."
"illegal immigration is great! Those wetbacks work for just about nothing. More money in my pocket"

As long as people are content with catagorizing themselves into these impossibly monolithic groups, and de-humanizing those who are "against" them, we will keep getting bamboozled by the us-versus-them politics of boogeyman-ism. The "two-party system" has become a one-party (divide and conquer) system.

Some political theory history for everyone:
The neocons primary theoretical antecendent is Leo Strauss, a Trotskyite. Irving Kristol called the neoconservatives, "Socialists who just got mugged." More generally, they're welfare-staters (whether it be personal welfare or corporate) who supported Reagan during the Cold War and they're primarily defined by their foreign policy stances (specifically pre-emptive 'Big Stick'/military action over diplomacy) rather than domestic ones.
Also, they're mostly assholes. They're the ones that make shit up to get their way in government, (e.g., the OSP [Doug Feith's group] in the Pentagon and the current Pentagonian Iran Working Group [and if you don't believe they're trying to get us into Iran, despite the failures in Iraq, you're fooling yourself]).
So, for all you 'liberal haters' out there, be aware of how you label yourselves.

People will label your labels!

And then others will label the label-labelers!

I don't either. An isolationist philosophy really only works under a certain set of international circumstance, and isn't going to work in an age of instant communications all around the globe and nuclear missiles.

I don't follow that. By isolationist, I thought we were talking about economic self reliance, self controlled, self contained, as much as possible.

Are you speaking of isolationist as a physical defense mode, a metaphorical Great Wall of China?

I want allies.
I agree 9th, the Japanese model is an excellent one. While maintaining a strong home military and strengthening our borders.

It is very simple... don't do business with people who don't like you. If they bad-mouth you or go against you interests, on a regular basis, just don't. If they start, call in your debts from them, NOW.
We need to start making nations pay back our loans anyway & if they do not, remove natural resources. Easy enough to off-shore drill until the over-due debt is paid or something similar.

We do NOT want to get that ball rolling. We borrow considerably more than we lend.

The Japs have virtually zero natural resources, which is why they have waged war on their neighbors repeatedly.
They have the social structure to be very productive when given raw materials and a market.... we gave them both.
