VE Day, May 8th, 1945 ended WW II in Europe. This film was made in Berlin only two months later in July. My father was impressed with the chains of women with buckets clearing debris, whereas the French were sitting around waiting for someone else to fix their shit.

Although some sounds were added/present, the silence seems even more poignant.
As someone who remembers the b/w Newsreels of the time, seeing color films is still startling. (Unfortunately, the b/w's that I remember most vividly were those of the Death Camps) |
