An educated woman working to make others educated. I never cared for school until a 10th grade English teacher intervened. She wanted to spark my interest in reading and had me read The Good Earth. I was hooked and she knew it. The way I see it the people who earn PHD's are not doing it for money, although it does allow one to drive a better car.

You must live on the wrong side of the pond. Our states beg for teachers and professors.

The beach counties pay the big bucks. South Carolina pays best for any job. They steal our professionals with money. Hard to imagine. Plus there is no sales tax on grocery store food. Some of my friends live just over the line in NC and work in SC. They save big time on state income tax.

...because they are expected to work longer hours for less pay in a high-stress job... and then be "held accountable" for crap scores in flawed standardized testing regimens. Far better input-to-pay value working in a call center or grocery store...

In Philly teachers start at $45,000.
In my more affluent suburb it $46,000, after you jump through these hoops.
Permanent refers to after five years.

I was a district produce mgr for Hanniford Brothers with 1 yr college. That was stressful, but it paid well. I would rather teach 35 rat babies than do that again.

@Bruce how does that relate to the median salary there, though? It's a little higher here, I think, but still too low to be doable as the main bread-winner salary.
