I used to work my ass off for my employers. Once I figured out that you get nothing for it and the only way to advance is to change jobs, I quit doing that. Current company has taken advantage of the poor job market over the past few years by not increasing compensation one iota (and we're supposed to be grateful they haven't increase our health premiums); now people are leaving in droves and the higher-ups swear it's not compensation (even though some of those who are leaving told them it was in so many words).

As for blogging... can't imagine them firing me for blogging. They're not fascists, just cheap.

I dont respond very well to a tight schedule. I love that my bosses trust me to keep my own time, be professional and produce good work. I need time to percolate ideas, wander, dawdle, then it can flow when it needs to. That tend to look "off task" but I dont think it totally is. Maybe its the eclectic nature of the Cellar topics, but I generally find something connected to my daily work to read and think about. I like my gig and would do it for less money...but I dont tell them that.

I would do mine for more money. I keep telling my employer that, and for some reason, he just laughs and laughs and laughs ...

A couple of years ago I put in for an Asst. Director position. They asked me what I thought the salary should be. I named a number about 10% higher than I was making as a grunt.

I swear I heard the heart of the HR director stop right there. She woulda spit coffee if it weren't late afternoon when I was being interviewed.

Had I gotten the position, I would have earned a 10% cut in pay, along with that nice title. They wouldn't have even kept me at the same salary level ... which would have been an aggregate cut anyway, since I'm hourly and supervisors are salaried and lose OT.

Who woulda thunk it.
