Intonation isn't hard, it just takes patience.
FWIW, I *always* take my guitars to others, even for restringing. I'm lazy and stupid, and doing well to play the four chords I know...

update.
i reopened the back of my strat, tightened those big screws down to within 3/8" of full, which flattened that trem right down. Then i googled setting intonation and found that the idea is to have the 12th fret postion be the halfway point on the string. Most of my strings would be good open, but on the 12th fret, 1/8" off to the sharp side on my tuner graphic. I had to lengthen those strings, retune, recheck. repeat. took me 1/2 hour, but it was fun. sounds nice now, plus the action is back to how i remember it, and i can play it again.

Cool. I played a couple of American Standard Strats at the Musician's Friend Outlet Store today. Wish I had $600 I didn't need.

that's what mine is. 1987 model. i had asked a guy at the music store for a value, and he said if it was clean ( which it is) it would be worth $300-$350 to him. The older ones are better than the new ones, he said. They apparently started making them with less quality since the 90's.

Interesting. I haven't seen a clean used American Standard anywhere go for under $600-$650, so someone's getting a nice markup. Is 100% common in the music biz, I wonder?

That's because we've made all the mistakes at least once.

unfortunately they alway try to mark up 100% at guitar stores. You always have the option to consign, but they'll take a hefty fee for that too. Plus, they'll compare your used fender to the new G&L's they're trying to sell and basically undercut you with customers.
Not that i'm bitter. And the G&L Legacy is a really pretty guitar, I must admit.
