When my son was still in jr high back in the early '90's and we were living in Imperial Beach, California, we went to the 'Day of the Dead' festival in Mexico. At the time I did not know it was an actual religious ritual and not something put on for the tourists. If I had known we would not have gone. We did stay for about an hour and then left. My son, who was about 13 at the time, was quiet impressed. In the next days art class he drew what I considered a really neat sketch of what he saw, you know, candles, tombstones, skulls, things like that. Next thing I know, I'm being drug in for a parent/teacher conferance because my child has chosen such a 'morbid' subject. Oy Vey, he was drawing what he saw. Had no idea what kind of fuss it would cause.
One of the younger girls I was going to school with had a similar problem. Her parents were divorced (couldn't stand each other but wanted what was best for the kids). They thought she was depressed and sent her to a shrink. She wasn't depressed, just being a normal 15 year old, but she didn't want her parents to waste their money, so when the shrink asked her to draw pictures of her family, she did. Very interesting ones, and very graphic, since her ambition in life was to become a comic book artist. She had all sorts of interesting things to draw. House burning, dad trapped in the attic, mom strung up from a noose in a tree, little brother sitting in an electric chair, family dog on a spit, stuff like that. Next thing she know the shrink calls the entire family in and is dicussing hospitilization and drug therapy. That's when she got scared and 'fessed up. Guess it just doesn't pay to have an imagination anymore. Or maybe that's what they want.
