That's right. The quote was actually from a story I was telling of my experiences at the DMV one day (where I saw a guy yelling at the man behind the counter - like that is going to get you what you want).

Anyway, yes, beds are expensive, but they only expect maybe 5% of the suckers to pay that price. You can negotiate! Just learn the art of the haggle and use it to your advantage. Here's how it went for my mattress:

"This mattress here, what can you do for me on a queen size? Surely you don't expect me to actually pay anywhere near $1,400."

"Well... I guess I could go as low as... let's see... *does some quick fake math on a piece of paper*... $900."

"$700 and I buy it now."

"Eight hundred."

"$725 and I buy it now."

"You drive a hard bargain. Alright."

That was it. Twenty five seconds of work and we got almost 50% off the sale price.

You can do it too! The key is confidence.

Futon fun: Back when I was young and a single gal, I worked at a futon place. I had this cool Japanese style platform bed and futon. One romantic evening my new boyfriend at the time was staying over. As part of the goofy nervousness, he happily shouted "Yea! a waterbed!" followed by a long sprint and dramatic leap onto the structure. Crack. He really busted his back, and all but two of my maple slats. Kinda ruined the moment. I couldnt stop laughing.
