I get quite cross when people grumble about Valentine's Day being a made up holiday and only about people spending money, which they could spend any other days of the year...
What about Christmas? Most people who I've heard complain about Valentine's Day are Christians in no more than name, if that. It's a made-up day too, even if you are Christian, because Jebus was NOT born 25 December 0 AD/BC. And cards and trees were certainly not part of the "first Christmas". Neither were snow or Coca-Cola. I'm atheist and I still buy cards and presents and traditional food. Because I love and care about people and am willing to swallow the trite "It's the most wonderful time of the year" BS that goes along with it. Advent is even more shocking - supposedly a time of reflection and prayer, preparing to let the Saviour into your heart - now packaged as a cartoon advent calendar with chocolates in? Hello - made up for the benefit of retailers? Ditto Easter. Chocolate eggs? Made up tradition. I wouldn't presume to tell anyone what to celebrate and what not to. I just gently suggest that they're not too hypocritical about it. Merc - I think you have things upside down. A handmade card is such a wonderful idea. I wish everyone would make them, then we could dispense with the idea that this is about money not thoughts (of course it costs more money, usually to make than buy) But I have to call you on the copying of wording. Crikey me, that's what makes me reject 99.9% of cards. The shite that's written in them. A handmade card with a personal message would mean so much. Why give the person who knows you best someone else's words? Yes, I send store cards. But I'm not happily married ![]() |

My loved ones know I love them. I could run around and spend all my money to show them that, or I can just tell them, as I did already this morning. As I do every time I see or talk to them. They'd rather I pay my rent and stuff like that. But of course some love it, that's why the holidays have never fallen by the wayside or out of fashion: there are plenty of people who like to spend money on others.
Handmade cards, homemade foodz, hand-written notes...those are the lovely things. Then again MY FLOWERS AREN'T IN THE STREET! ![]() |

I was just trying to compare Valentine's Day to other made up occasions.
You should hear the moans here about Halloween being an American import ![]() And lucky for me, my flowers are not in the street either, nor is my cake out in the rain. |

Don't think of it as money out the window! Think of it as paying for sex with a cheap card and crappy chocolates. :-)

![]() (dirty little secret: I like little prezzies and stuffz from boyz, I just don't count on it, and I'm fine without it. But I'm a girl at heart...surprise!) And my thread was more in response to merc's Single Appreciation Day (which is how it was written up in the college newspaper this week though I'd not heard of it before) on behalf of us singlets. ![]() But there ARE people who won't settle for anything but diamonds and furs, and there are those who will supply those things. I don't care how rich you are, that's just silly. I'd be perfectly happy with a new house and a pool and some acreage, myself. ![]() |

That story is right up there with Hemingway's "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." for concise sad story.

I have my fur every night.
Even if I have to deal with the smell in the morning. That's real love I guess. |

Yes, it is. I won't have a kitteh to hug tonight.
![]() This is also the anniversary of a Very Bad Thing (I know some of you remember, I don't want to get into it, but many of you were there for me during that awful time...for which I am still grateful.) I think I'll go to the bar down the street from me tonight. |

Thank you Sundae.
What's awful is, as much as I think about it through the year, I'd forgotten about it until I posted that. She was such a sweet young lady, and she left a void in the world. But I still see her smile and hear her laugh. Anyway...she'd like me being silly, so I'm not bummin' out the thread anymore. |

One I gave my wife was pretty funny. On the front it has a picture of two squirrels, with one handing the other a nut and he is saying, "My nuts are yours." Inside says, "And I don't say that to just anyone." "Happy Valentines Day" ![]() And I found it in the local grocery store, which is pretty bold considering the bible beaters we have around here. I gave her flowers yesterday and some hand dipped chocolate covered strawberries today with the squirrel card.

I agree with Sundae. But you are right, Merc, there are some good cards out there. Your card, pretty funny, hehe. I think your wife will like it. But homemade stuffs really do mean more. They do cost more money, time, and effort. I got a homemade V-day card. Just a simple little card but it made me smile and warmed my heart. It has been days and whenever I think of the card, I still smile. Yups, sometimes the thought really does count.
