My buddy had heartburn, they cured it with a quintuple bypass.

Ouch.
Mine is much improved by ridding my world of that toxic grain the feds keep subsidizing. Label reading sucks...

No, they actually block the release of Hydrogen ions and decrease the amount of acid your stomach produces. Vinegar is a slightly acidic solution which does not help the problem of acid in the stomach.

Apple cider vinegar itself is acidic, but it reacts with and removes hydrogen ions from the stomach acid, leaving a more basic solution remaining. Prior to both c-sections, the hospital gave me a shot of apple cider vinegar to swallow, to reduce the pain of stomach acid flowing back up my esophagus as the anesthetic kicked in. Plain white vinegar does not have the same chemical composition, however, and doesn't achieve the same effect at all.

The strength of vinegar is measured by the percent of acetic acid present in the product. All vinegar sold in the United States at the retail level should be at least 4% acidity as mandated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Typical white distilled vinegar is at least 4% acidity and not more than 7%. Cider and wine vinegars are typically slightly more acidic with approximately 5-6% acidity.

Relief from Heartburn
For relief of heartburn or acid indigestion, take one or two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar.
I admit, I have never heard of that before but there you go. Learn something new everyday.

I have used vinegar for heartburn many times. I was told (and in a way this makes sense, whether it is accurate is another thing) that the reason for over production of stomach acid is that your stomach thinks (ha ha) that there is not enough acid to digest the food in it. (maybe from not chewing?) so the acidic taste from the vinegar (also works with lemon juice I'm told) cues your stomach that there is in fact enough acid.

That's what I've been told.

I'm on Lanzaprazole for my GORD (same as GERD)
Before that I would have such appalling attacks of acid reflux that I didn't know whether I needed to cough, burp or throw up, but what I really wanted was to claw my own throat out. Terrible pain.

The drug I'm on is known as a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) and this group prevent the stomach from producing gastric acid. A quick check of the internet suggests this is available as Prevacid 24HR in the States.

According to Letterman, if you have less than a quintuple bypass, you're a pussy. Popdigr and your buddy are not pussies.

I will try that and get back to you. I've heard similar things about the taste of sweetness and the body's insulin response, (from a diabetic who said that diet soda fucked up his blood sugar levels) I think it might possibly have something to do with obesity, but not sure. I always found it ironic that people would order two slices of pizza with pepperoni and extra cheese and a diet coke.

Who the fuck knows?

I just know that I need to stay away from bread and pasta.

.
Why? Diet Coke tastes completely different from regular coke. I cannot stand regular coke. or caffeine free. or pepsi of any variety. But I love my diet coke.

I'm the opposite. I can't stand the taste of any diet drink. Not even Coke Zero.

Fair enough. But it's a matter of taste, not dieting.
