How about a magnetic tape? The relatively smooth background is the tape, and the stuff on the surface is the magnetic particles.

Or maybe it's some sort of coating on a lens or other glass.

Normally I post a series of images slowly pulling out to reveal more of the object, but I found it difficult with this as i thnk it's suddenly a give away.
