Ali, I think you rock for doing this -truly, not everyone one would, possibly most wouldn't. I agree with others -mom before social services, but why wait until Saturday? Has it always been this Saturday she's been due back or is it each week she says she'll be back at the weekend?

She called a couple of days ago and said she'd be back on Friday (tomorrow) or Saturday. I have doubts about whether she'll show up or not, but I'm hopeful that she will. I'll ask C for her number when he gets home tonight although he's not due home till fairly late himself.
V, I'd like to avoid getting the authorities involved if possible. Making a complaint formally is my last resort. I'd probably already have called them if that's the sort of person I was (I think...or else I'd have just stayed right out of it and let some other busy body worry over it) Incidentally, I do feel a bit like a busy body putting myself in this situation in some ways. Families are personal things and in general I think it's bad form to interfere in someone else's family. It just all sort of happened in this case though. One thing led to another so to speak.

The kid was brave enough to admit to you that he couldn't handle it. It's not like you walked over there and took the kids into your house. You're not interfering, you're responding to his cry for help. If the mom has the audacity to suggest that you were interfering, then she really is fucked in the head.

Update: She called last night but I didn't get to speak with her. She's still saying she'll be home either tonight (friday) or tomorrow. The catch now is that she's bringing her parents with her to stay with them till xmas. The parents are coming for a holiday.
I'm sure all the excitement of that will be conducive to study. I guess I should just be glad that it looks like she's really coming this time.

Can you offer the older boy(s) a quiet place to study at your house?

Well, I have two kids of my own who are the same age. The only main difference would be the lack of grandparents.
Anyway, they have libraries at school. I'm sure they could stay back and do the bulk of their study there. It's only another week and exams will be started, which means two or three weeks and it's all over. I'm sure K wont want too much more input from me once she gets home anyway. At least she and two other adults will be there to do the household stuff and cook the meals. That's something that should really be good for them all.

If she doesn't, put the whole family up for auction on E-Bay.
Seriously, BigV has a good point.

Yep, she got home last night at about 7:30pm. I haven't spoken to her as yet, but I expect to later today.

Well I would have to say that if you are friendly enough with her to have a glass of wine with her you should be able to give her a piece of your mind about everything that went down.
So let us know how it went.

I've decided to go have my say when all the kids are at school tomorrow. I don't think they need to hear what I have to say on the issue, and I doubt they'll need to hear what their mother has to say in response.
She did bring her parents back with her. I'm wondering now if she might have had a bit of a breakdown or something and that's why she stayed away so long. Anyway, we shall see.
