Frankly, I think the hugging strangers bit is freaky, and contains within it an opportunity for frotteurism (look it up), but if the hugs are only provided to people who consent, no problem.

Any type of touching without consent is assault.

I'm not sure where the linkage between illegal search and illegal hugging comes in, though.
I think you gotta wind it back a few notches, there, rzen.

I take it you did not watch the video... that is the only way you could have gotten that it was touching without consent.

It also seems that you did not read all of the first post. Try not to tail-post, it wastes people's time.

It's not a tail post. You never made the connection between the unlinked dog story and the hug video/story, except they both piss you off.

Any idea why they banned the hugs? And why 10,000 signatures (the target) made a difference?

It was a very sweet video and did make me feel warm and fuzzy inside - but I have no desire to hug a stranger. I'm not honestly sure anyone would appreciate me shrinking away from them and not really wanting contact...

From the video, I did not get that they were "going after" anyone for a hug.
What I got was that it was more of an open offer and not really more about the physical contact as the Idea of our isolationist trend.
The cops/dog part of the post was due to the banning of the activity, which was none of the cops damn business.
I am often stating that cops need to remember their DAMN PLACE, which they have long forgotten. Using dogs in cars where the owner has refused a search, where the cop has no probable cause is strictly illegal.
They try to pretend that the dog is not a cop, but if you defend yourself against the dog (which anyone should do) you are treated as and called a cop-killer/beater...
It was just an example of how police have decided that some of our basic rights, illegal search and seizure and probable cause, just are not really needed any longer.
This, the banning of an offer for a free hug, is an extreme example of how cops have lost sight of who they work for.
"Protect and serve" means the State now.
It is time to take our nation back.

I found the video interesting from a sociological standpoint.

Only freaks (and teen girls) hugged the freaks.

Yes, I did notice that the video only showed consent. That doesn't mean all instances of contact was consensual. I also pointed out the possibility of sexualized contact, even with consent for "just" the hug.

You are right... I am sure they jumped a bunch of people off camera... makes perfect sense.
We are all a bunch of perverts hippies out in the world, especially those who tape it and post it on the internet... how logical!!!!

City worker Elly Mitchell, who handed out a few free hugs on her lunch break today, said she was inspired to organise the event after seeing the video online.

"We're going to hug the city," Ms Mitchell said.

A City of Sydney spokesman Josh MacKenzie said he could find no record of rangers asking Mann to move on.
Was the story re dogs Australian as well? Otherwise there isn't a connection.

Are we sure this isn't simply a promotion for the song?
Any Australian posters hear about this at the time?

I've seen Aussie cops do it... I have also seen them just search the damn car.
Yes, I am sure it is not just a promotion for the song. I spoke with someone who knows one of the originators of the action, it has caught on and has actually been continued elsewhere and in other countries.

i like the people that go running and leap into his arms. and the little girl was sweet too.

cops have to be careful, so i can see them resisting a hug. also, they tend to be ADD types, and too macho to hug a hippie. makes sense

I wouldn't have considered myself a threat. Actually, I was under the impression that marines and their counterparts were highly trained and rarely made mistakes.

I had to read that twice to make sure it did not, indeed, read "Effeminate the threat!"
