A Slightly Different View of Images of Mary

For a good religious time check out:

http://www.truthofgod.com/site/enter.asp

This is the site of a fire and brimstone preacher in
Philadelphia (he has a television ministry and travels
around to various convocations on mostly the east
coast).

There are archived copies of many of his programs ...
DO NOT MISS program number 609, in which he discusses
idolatry, and beats the plaster out of a statue of the
virgin mary ... (run forward to about 42 minutes in if
you don't want to sit through the whole program. The
REAL action hits, quite literally, at about 50
minutes)

EDIT: I thought it was a pretty good likeness of the Lady in the stump, there.

People see the Virgin Mary in a lot of things, apparently...

I've been told these are just things floating in your eyes. Not sure if it's true, but it seems like a reasonable explanation to me.

Now I'm NOT disagreeing, but "Thou shalt not kill" is a poor translation from the Aramaic. Form what I understand the original was closer in meaning to "Thou Shalt Not Commit Murder" - It allows for self defense. Of course, this doesn't apply in the NI situation, so this is an aside....

My Aramaic's a little rusty, but I did a translation. I think it's pretty close.

"Thou shalt not kill, unless the people whom you are killing are brown, or have otherwise done something to offend or trouble you."

The US constitution; the pure innocence of a newborn baby; the beauty of music; creativity and originality; the progress of humankind; freedom; and four cheese Cheese Nips.

I guessed that much, even then I considered the possibility. Yet giving those things far greater meaning was far more excieting.

Apparently, Deuteronomy 7 (specifically 7:2) is taken to mean that God supports killing in war.

7:2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, [and] utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

7:5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

7:6 For thou [art] an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that [are] upon the face of the earth.

Yeah, but that's OLD Testament Jehovah. We now have Jehovah v2.0, the kinder, gentler, more forgiving God, who only allows killing if you don't believe in Jesus, and then only He gets to knock off your immortal soul.

That seems reasonable.

It's a common misconception that Catholics worship Mary. However, if a Catholic is truly worshipping Mary, then they are not practicing the Catholic faith. In fact, they are abandoning what their faith teaches them, as many have pointed out here.

For more details on the difference between "worshipping Mary" and "veneration of the Saints," see http://www.americancatholic.org/Feat...y_worship.asp. It's certainly not the only site that helps explain this common misconception, but it's the first I found.

This is what I meant. Of course, it only applies if you are white and are from the southern US.

Not just brown......anything other than white. And even white if you're drunk or just lost at the latest cool video game.

Always glad to clarify

I'll have to take your word for it. I've also wondered about that whole graven images prohibition, too. The Catholic supply stores I've been to are knee-deep in those things.

Welcome aboard, Syrinx. You'll learn that I'm half serious, half joking, and half intellectual... :p

If it's injection molded out of cheap plastic is it still technically graven?
