It looks like an x-ray of the profile of a skull, but I logically know that x-rays don't display a black "eye hole"

The original has more background and is turned 90 degrees.
It is amazing how deceptive it still is after 70 years. Ask for answer (some hints are already posted) if you're still stumped. |

Right.
To be precise, the points of the nails were ground off, not the heads. I have been working on a project (new thread pending...) and this is a chunk of a couple layers of plywood that had some protruding nails---not anymore! Then I cut it as needed, pics later. Here's a shot of an adjacent section pre-"leveling".
