Griff POSTED it, but I got it.

Alternate acceptable answer: how I knew it was time to stop mowing last night.

I spent a can of aerosol yellow jacket poison on the nest entrances I could see. I'll replenish my supply of killer in a can and pick up a few more traps on the way home tonight.

I hate those fuckers *so hard*.

I wonder if someone could shed some light on this for me?

Is a 'stinger' an insect in its own right, or is what is pictured left behind by the creature after it has stung?

A bit of US v UK puzzlement on my part, I think.

Ta!

Yellow jackets are not our friends. Bald face hornets hit me harder though.

A friend of mine had that problem so he poured gasoline down their hole. When he was done mowing he could still hear them so he gave them another dose. After putting everything away he could still hear them so he lit a match and threw it at the hole. Blew a hole in the lawn over 3 ft deep but no more buzzing.

Sorry, that's not correct.

Yellowjackets are hornets, and wasps are wasps.

Wasps are generally distinguished by very slender "waists" and hornets are generally bulkier and often have black and yellow markings. The wasps come in a wide range of colors.

Yellowjackets often nest in burrows underground. Note xoB's gas/match/crater story.... So tempting...

Nothing new here, but most bees have barbed stingers and the whole mechanism is torn from its abdomen after stinging.
The stinger continues to spasm and pump venom after you have pulled the bee off and stomped it 400 times into the ground, so remove the stinger by scraping it off, then proceed to stomp.
Hornets and wasps usually have smooth stingers so they jab, inject venom and pull out, usually to hit you somewhere else.
Best to kill the only the ones close to your activity areas and at night when they are home watching TV.

The thing about yellow jackets is they not only sting repeatedly, they *bite* while they sting. The bite will itch for days after the sting has gone away. You have to be careful not to scratch yourself raw.
I recommend a paste of green clay with a touch of tea tree oil.

I'm getting ready to go murder them now. It's rained lightly for a couple days, the sun's been up for only a few hours, it's not warm out yet. I'll clear the area of the debris then we'll see. I have four cans of poison and a couple new baits for the traps for those that evade my wrath. And I have two gallons of gas, FOR THE MOWER, jeeze you guys.

But if I have any left, I may well dispose of it dramatically.
