*** Re: the suggestions about sound training. Pepper's phobia is so deep and intense that as soon as he hears any kind of boom, he won't eat or play at all. You could offer him a steak or an entire chicken and he wouldn't come take it. He loves running next to the bike, though, so my husband tried taking him out yesterday with a very distant storm, and the minute he heard a low rumble he dug his heels in so hard he bloodied his paws up.  The vet never returned our call last week, so we'll be calling again tomorrow.
