(I Never Loved) Eva Braun by the Boomtown Rats
Are you really going out with Adolf? I never loved Eva Braun (oh no?) No, a thousand people say I did (oh yeah?) Yeah, she was just some girl who was on the make (Yes, we see) Boy she wanted to be so big. And in the end it got to be a drag, She's doing her exercises every day No matter what people say, I never loved Eva Braun. I never heard all the screams (oh no?) I never saw the blood and dirt and gore (oh yeah?) That wasn't part of the dream, (yes, we see) Of maps and generals and uniforms. I'd always like the big parade, I always wanted to be adored, In '33 I knew I had it made, I never loved.... Eva Braun wasn't history, She wasn't even part of my destiny She never really fitted in the scheme of things She was a triumph of my will, Oh yeah! I saw the blondies and the blue eyes, (oh yeah?) I saw the millions mouthing me, (oh yeah?) But underneath I was really gentle, (oh yeah?) D'ja ever see me touch a scrap of meat? O yeah I conquered all those countries They were weak an' I was strong A little too ambitious maybe, But I never loved Eva Braun. Gee!

Welcome To Machine
Welcome my son
Welcome to the machine Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been You've been in the pipeline Filling in time Provided with toys and scouting for boys You brought a guitar to punish your ma And you didn't like school And you know you're nobody's fool So welcome to the machine Welcome my son Welcome to the machine What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream You dreamed of a big star He played a mean gituar He always ate in the Steak Bar He loved to drive in his Jaguar So welcome to the Machine Pink Floyd |

"When I Fall" -- Barenaked Ladies
I look straight in the window, try not to look below Pretend I'm not up here, try counting sheep But the sheep seem to shower off this office tower Nine-point-eight straight down I can't stop my knees I wish I could fly From this building From this wall And if I should try Would you catch me if I fall? My hands clench the squeegee, my secular rosary Hang on to your wallet, hang on to your rings Can't look below me, or something might throw me Curse at the windstorms that October brings I look in the boardroom; a modern pharaoh's tomb I'd gladly swap places, if they care to dive They're lined up at the window, peer down into limbo They're frightened of jumping, in case they survive I wish I could step from this scaffold Onto soft green pastures, shopping malls, or bed With my family and my pastor and my grandfather who's Dead Look straight in the mirror, watch it come clearer I look like a painter, behind all the grease But paintings creating, and I'm just erasing A crystal-clear canvas is my masterpiece

Time for a bump I think, with my favourite paean to unrequited love:
How Could You Want Him by the Spin Doctors I’m quite contented to take my chances Against the guildensterns & rosencrantses It’s a matter of cain & abel And I can feel your knee underneath the table He doesn’t dangle by the seraphim He only wants a pretty face by him so How could you want him when you know you could have me? See the pigeons peck & peck to pay the dues They peck a little extra to resole their shoes He’s with the pigeons pecking crumbs I’m on my deathbed bleeding with the cherubim He doesn’t dangle by the seraphim He only wants a pretty face by him so How could you want him when you know you could have me? Ferocious angels send me falling stars But I know just how dangerous wishes are Ferocious angels watch me come and go But I’m not too smart to go barging off of roof tops, though Sit out september on the window sill ’cause you can’t drink wine from a two dollar bill Saint christopher lives on the end of a quill Leave him a diamond in your last will He doesn’t dangle by the seraphim He only wants a pretty face by him so How could you want him when you know you could have me? How could you want him when you know you could have me? (x4) (Sounds great in the bath!)

And a little beauty from Neil Finn
Faster Than Light Close your eyes go to sleep Close your eyes get so dizzy World is spinning in your bed I know where the sun goes It's waking up the sparrows In England it's morning In time you'll see that some things travel faster than light In time you'll recognise that love is larger than life Now you know what you're missing Now you've seen that I'm willing If you're looking for the message Close your eyes Do you hear what I'm thinking? Is it how you imagined? In time you'll see that some things travel faster than light In time you'll recognise that love is larger than life And praise will come to those whose kindness leaves you without debt And bends the shape of things that haven't happened yet Close your eyes Colours changing like a lizard Close your eyes I know where the sun goes I have seen the world turning In time you'll find that some things travel faster than light In time you'll recognise that love is larger than life And praise will come to those whose kindness leaves you without debt and bends the shape of things to come that haven't happened yet (the way it is sung brings a lump to my throat, but I think the lyrics bear scrutiny alone)

LIZ PHAIR
"Table For One" I'm walking down in the basement I'm leaning on the washing machine I'm reaching back through a hole in the wall's insulation I'm pulling out a bottle of vodka Replacing that with a pint of Jim Bean I'm lying down on the floor until I feel better It's morning and I pour myself coffee I drink it til the kitchen stops shaking I'm backing out of the driveway And into creation And the loving spirit that follows me Watching helplessly, will always forgive me Oh, I want to die alone With my sympathy beside me I want to bring down all those demons who drank with me Feasting bleed through me On my desperation I hide all the bottles in places They find and confront me with pain in their eyes And I promise that I'll make some changes But reaching back it occurs to me There will always be some kind of crisis for me Oh, I want to die alone With my sympathy beside me I want to bring back all those moments they stole from me In my reverie Darkening days end Oh, I want to die alone With my memories inside me I want to live that life When I could say people had faith in me I still see that guy in my memory Oh, I want to die alone With my sympathy beside me I want to bring down all those people who drank with me Watching happily My humiliation

I Shall Be Free -- Kid Beyond, Amplivate
I Shall Be Free -- Kid Beyond, Amplivate
One day I went walking down a lonesome road and I came upon a stranger in some funky robes. He said he was a soldier, I said where's your gun? He said I don't got one and I don't need one. I don't need no weapon, cause I don't fight no war. I said then well then mister soldier what you fighting for? Well he didn't say nothin', he just smiled at me. And then I heard him whisper "You Shall Be Free." Well excuse me mister, are you sayin I ain't free? Well, I don't see no shackles or chains on me. He said we're chained to our hatred and shackled by greed. Too blind to see the wonder and the mystery. We got to love one another, give our love so strong, Love your brother man even when he treats you wrong. When you love without limits, unconditionally; When you love without fear, then you Shall Be Free. So I pried my heart open, as wide as the sea, And the strangest sensations came over me. I could see the clouds dancing, felt a raindrop sting, I could hear the tiny beating of a butterfly wing. As I sat in the middle I, I felt this love unfold. A love too big for this body to hold. That day I became a warrior, with no enemy. Now I am that funky soldier and I Shall Be Free. Now I ain't afraid of livin' and I ain't scared to die. Cause I feel this vibration that I can't deny. I can feel it singin' through me like a symphony And it tastes so sweet like destiny. It's in everything I touch, everything I see It's in every single fiber of my body. Every star every creature every leaf on every tree Is a lesson and a blessin' and We Shall Be Free. I Shall, I Shall Be Free. I Shall, I Shall Be Free. I Shall, I Shall Be Free. I Shall, I Shall Be Free.

Out Came Oil
Exxon Bicentenial Singers (1976)
Oil's been around for centuries sure, floating in springs, in lakes and the streams. The Indians used if for a medicine cure, but never in the wildest of dreams did anyone think, that black sticky stuff, always in short supply, would ever have the power enough to gush its way to the sky! Chorus: When out came oil! Out came oil! Once that Edwin Drake dude, struck the bubbling crude, as his drill cut through the soil Out came oil! Out came oil! Spindletop, Turned it around The world soon saw just what oil could mean Starting off slow blowing out of the ground Then refining that crude to pure kerosene Oh we really started cracking with a process devised when a guy named Burton appeared The history of oil kept us all suprised, cause it's only been one-hundred years! Since Out - came - oil! Out - came - oil! Industry stood right on, serving home and farm It caused the melting pot to boil When OUT CAME OIL OUT CAME OIL From the hunches and devining rods Going agaist all of the odds To the power and the lubrication For every type of transportation and equipment you can name Since Out - came - oil! Out - came - oil! Nothing, in this world, has been the same!!!! OUT CAME OIL!! OUT CAME OIL!!!!

The old bastard left his ties and a suit
A brown box Moth balls and bowling shoes And his opinions so you'd never have to choose Pretty soon you'll be an old bastard too You get smaller as the world gets big The more you know you know you don't know shit "The Whiz Man" will never fit you like "The Whiz Kid" did So why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's okay if you don't know everything Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's okay If you don't know everything Close your eyes Close your ears young man You've seen and heard all an old man can Spread the facts on the floor like a fan Throw away the ones that make you feel bad Kids today are getting old too fast They can't wait to grow up so they can kiss some ass They get nostalgic about the last ten years Before the last ten years have passed So why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's okay if you don't know everything Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's okay if you don't know everything Tears land on a hand on a chest The old bastard had a paradigm arrest He got smaller and the world got big The more he knew he knew he didn't know shit "The Whiz Man" never fit him like "The Whiz Kid" did So why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's ok if you don't know everything Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know? It's ok if you don't know everything |

I'm getting cold
You used to have a heart Now I guess its just a stone You said leave me alone But even tho I'm here You know that I'm already gone Gone, baby Even tho I'm here you know that I'm already gone Gone, baby Even tho I'm here you know that I'm already gone We've got some time So lets walk hand in hand together And hold our heads up high Since I can't read your mind You've got to tell me what you're thinking I won't write in the sky I won't write in the sky We're getting old We've planted our seeds and now we wait for them to grow You said I'll never show You how I really feel or which way I'm gonna go Gone, baby Even tho I'm here you know that I'm already gone Gone, baby Even tho I'm here you know that I'm already gone We've got some time So lets walk hand in hand together And hold our heads up high Since I can't read your mind You've got to tell me what you're thinking I won't write in the sky I won't write in the sky No one to hold The world will make a dream And a prayer out of our bones To find where we belong Our shadows will remain Even after we are gone Gone, baby Even tho I'm here you know that I'm already gone Gone, baby Even tho I'm here you know that I'm already gone

Rainbow Eyes - Rainbow
She's been gone since yesterday Oh, I didn't care Never cared for yesterdays Fancies in the air No sighs or mysteries She lay golden in the sun No broken harmonies But I've lost my way She had rainbow eyes Rainbow eyes Rainbow eyes Love should be a simple blend A whisper on the shore No clever words you can't defend They lead to never more No sighs or mysteries She lay golden in the sun No broken harmonies But I've lost my way She had rainbow eyes Rainbow eyes Rainbow eyes Summer nights are colder now They've taken down the fair And all the lights have died somehow Or were they ever there? No sighs or mysteries She lay golden in the sun No broken harmonies But I've lost my way She had rainbow eyes Rainbow eyes Rainbow eyes

Spinning, laughing, dancing to
her favorite song A little girl with nothing wrong Is all alone Eyes wide open Always hoping for the sun And she'll sing her song to anyone that comes along Fragile as a leaf in autumn Just fallin' to the ground Without a sound Crooked little smile on her face Tells a tale of grace That's all her own Spinning, laughing, dancing to her favorite song A little girl with nothing wrong And she's all alone --Norah Jones

Possibly the greatest song ever written by a stoned hippy: Imagine
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one |
