I just learned that the blue tail (and sometimes the lines) on an American Five-Lined Skink indicates a juvenile.

I wonder: if skink-predators vision is hyper-blue-sensitive,
maybe it's a survival trait so the predator goes for the tail
and it breaks away allowing the young'un to escape and grow
up to be a big skink.

I also learned that skinks can voluntarily/spontaneously pop-off their tail, or any section/length thereof, in order to evade predators. I thought it pulled off only when they were caught by it.

Also, the tail continues writhing/wriggling to draw the predator's attn from the escaping skink.

The picture isn't all that neat, but I'm just happy I manage to capture a balloon.
We were ready with the cameras because we thought it was going to come over our house, but the very slight wind which we couldn't even feel on the ground sent it away to the South-West of us.
