Pillars of cremation
Actual crematorium. Decided against the Birkenau pic as being too tasteless even for me.

I walked thou the Crematorium at Dachau. Back about 1962. I had B&W photos, but gave them to a guy going home.

That must have been kind of creepy, what was it like?

Well I was only about 17 years old and had no knowledge about Jewish people. Before I went in Army I'd never heard some of the names that were called about other people, but one of course. Guess you could say that I didn't really understand what I was seeing. I did find a sorry photo of one of the ovens. I have a few more, but nothing you can't find on web

I went as well, when I was 16. The guides told us that the gas chamber we stood in was never used in that particular camp, but on the internet, there seems to be some debate about that. It was creepy standing in there though.
The ovens were also kind of creepy. There was a single barracks set up, and foundations for scores more. And a little museum with horrific artifacts, like a vest made out of human skin that one of the Nazis made. Teeth for buttons. The whole place is pretty depressing, and the mood is somber. Not a fun place to visit. But you feel like it's your duty to go. They opened a holocaust museum in DC a while ago, and I haven't been to that one, because I feel like I paid my dues going to Dachau. |

Dues? Is there an obligation to go to a holocaust museum? I don't think so.

It ties in to the whole Never Forget thing regarding genocide.
"Obligation" is a bit strong but the people who go to the DC museum or tour the camps aren't doing it for fun. They feel a sense of obligation or duty. Not sure what the right word is. Similar to people flying a flag on Memorial Day. |

That "sense of obligation or duty" has been deliberately created and cultured. Every Jewish mother is skilled in the practice.

Here's a sorry photo of the gas chamber that Glatt mention. When I was there was no tour guides, and there was an Army base and stockade around same area.
