Squirrels are actually omnivores. Fruits and nuts are easiest 'prey' so they primarily eat those, but they'll go after eggs in bird's nests and hatchlings if they figure it's easy enough. That's why birds will pitch a fit about a squirrel near a brooding mom or chicks.
