Around here I'd never do that -- but I do live in a heavily Hispanic town in Southern California. They aren't about diet -- I've never seen sugar-free Jarritos sodas nor sugar free sodas in Mexican grocery marts -- but you can leave off the sour cream and rice in the burrito and lean heavily to the pico-de-gallo and other salsa.

I just voluntarily consumed pancakes with maple syrup.

One, I don't really like pancakes. Dense bread products just aren't my thing. I'd rather do something fluffier like a waffle. Two, I hate hate hate maple syrup. It makes me gag. When the kids have it, I make them eat on paper plates so I don't have to wash them.

But rarely, maybe once a year, out of nowhere I get a hankerin' for it. These were multi-grain pancakes so they had a nice texture, and the syrup was thinner and less pungent than your typical bottled product. Man, they were good. But even now, I can look back at the meal and say, "Nope, I'm good now. No need to eat that again."

Fobble, all I can say is you have a very strange palate... me, I reckon Grade B maple syrup the food of the Deciduous Forest Gods.

I mean berry syrups at IHOP are, well, okay. My palate just can't tell me why they bother.

depends. You Americans aren't into malty fruity things as much as we Brits, but that said, beest is not a big fan of dried fruit, but can inhale a few buttered slices of maltloaf and want more. Very rich and sticky. They are one of the few items in the Uk that regularly go on "special offer" in the UK, so it's worth waiting until you see them "on sale".

The Co-Op (awesome building) in Newcastle city center has them on special. They have some pretty killer pita bread at 2 for 79p too.

My favorite snack is to walk to the Co-Op for cheap pita bread and then hit the Sainsbury's Local on the way back up the hill to grab their hummus, which is 10p cheaper than at the Co-Op. Yes, I like the cheap.

I should have thought of buttering the maltloaf. I'm not sure I really need to. It's pretty delicious all on its own.

Damnit, I think her nearest co-op is too far now she moved. Sainsbury's Houmous is far superior to Co-op's anyway. Co-op do a really good cheap bottle pub bitter.

If your local Sainsbury's does oatcakes (very thin and flat like crepes, 8"ish diameter, 6 in a pack), let me know -we're in business!

Have you been to Lindisfarne yet? Bamburgh? Seahouses? that's round where I used to live.

I'll check Sainsbury's for the oatcakes. There are so many strange things in the stores here that I can hardly keep track. I'd be happy to put together a package if you're dying for oatcakes and maltcakes.

I've been so busy, I have been nowhere. This fact makes me kind of sad. The year is disappearing and I don't want to get to September and head home without getting to Scotland and a few places close to Newcastle.

On the way back to Newcastle at winter break I rode the train from London. That was a lot of fun. I'm totally addicted to the train after riding the great European rail system. (Eurostar is AMAZING.)

I can't believe I ate that entire 3 pack of chocolate caramel slice things. (Which are one of the few food items from England that North America needs to catch onto.)
