Last Saturday morning, my buddy Bo Warren and I were trolling for stripers in the Bay. We were 1 1/2 miles offshore in about 80 feet of water contemplating why the fish weren't biting. We looked back to check our gear and saw something odd in the water. Was it a seal?? Can't be, we don't have seals around here. On closer look, it turned out to be a buck deer that was WAY off course. He was desperate and barely staying afloat.

Their head and shoulders are out of the water and they make surprisingly good headway. This critter was just keeping his nose up and looked like he'd been swimming all night long. Turns out Bo grew up around cows and was really handy with a bowline. He lassoed the deer on the first try!

Bo grabbed his neck, I grabbed the flank, and we barreled over backwards into the boat. Before I knew it, Bo was on top of him and had him tied up just like a calf.

The whole time we kept thinking he was going to kick the snot out of us. He never did though; he was totally spent. We untied him and jumped back. Too weak to stand, he just sat there quivering. We even picked him up again and put his feet underneath him, but he still couldn't walk.

Don't know if he made it or not, but I think his chances were vastly improved. Hopefully he recovered after time. When you're out & about, ya just never know...

Look at what's happened here. This poor deer swims 1½ miles from shore and is rescued by a marine named Bo; the story mentions trolling, stripers, and seals. Seems like a rare event and a tale with plenty to joke about. So where is everybody posting? Over in the Goring at Pamplona thread. OK, I get it. If the deer had a good set of antlers and attacked the fishermen, then everyone would come to have fun with the buck. :p

Good on them. Saved one for the herd. Hopefully it will grow up big and give some body some really good meat and a set of antlers.

I would of done the same thing.

I am well known for animal rescues, especially my *tortoise rescue* escapades, which seems to always fall on a party nite when I am done up in my tarting gear.

If I see a tortoise on the road, I will make a mad dash onto the road in the rain and take it to which ever side of the road it was heading.

My friends just roll their eyes.

I had a real problem when I went and saw the Turtles, you arent allowed to help the poor little buggers get to the ocean, no matter what happens to them.

If you were wearing your "tarting gear", I'm sure you could not only have helped the little buggers, but all the guys would been falling all over each other to help.

I almost hit a deer in an air-boat, scared the hell out of me, a HUGE gator got em' a few min later. Was wild, biggest gator I've ever seen, around 20'. I did not think they got that big.
This is not a fish story, it was on the Withlacoochee.
