Many rules increase comprehension AND can effect how you accomplish an unrelated task later. The world of Fonts is a science that many never realized is so important.

Research suggests that the new Microsoft ClearType font can increase reading speed up to 7%. Some fonts can actually cause the reader to frown. Excellent series of articles in IEEE Spectrum entitled The Technology of Text on the May 2007 issue. We are still working to improve Gutenberg's technology of 400 years ago (as well as Sze Tzu's of 2500 years ago).

I've been paying more attention to fonts, since I've been printing articles for an Aunt in her late eighties with deteriorating vision. She seems to do well with 14 point Comic Sans.
