AOL De ja vu
They gave me a VERY hard time when I canceled, at first. I had been with them for years, but canceled after the merger when the spam and spyware started in earnest... they sell you out to spyware in a BIG way. When I brought this up the conversation ended... ironically, I ended-up with RoadRunner and am very happy with them and their security software.

I think most big ISPs are in bed with spam. When I signed up with SBC my e-mail address had spam before I even gave the address out to anybody. It's just another way for them to get $. What are you going to do? Switch ISPs? Ha!

I can promise you... NOTHING is as bad as AOL. I'm not talking spam, I'm talking spyware, and tons of it.

Also, try getting AOL software off of your PC... you can't do it. Talk about a virus!
You basically have to uninstall Windows and reinstall it. |

Damn skippy you switch ISPs.
If you're not getting the Service, why give them the money? It's a competitive area. Call around. You may be surprised. Dialup has wider coverage, but broadband is gaining ground everywhere. Unfortunately, there are some situations where the ISP choice is welded to line provider choice, a'la Comcast here in the upper left hand corner. I don't like that and vote with my pocketbook accordingly. I use Qwest (ptui!) as my line provider, but I use Blarg! online services as my ISP. Sorry, make that Avvanta Communications. Silly name change purely for cosmetic purposes. What, Blarg wasn't already silly enough?

Choice here is as follows:
DSL with AT&T. If you go with another ISP you pay SBC costs + ISP costs. In other words there is no point unless you want to spend $ for support. The other options are Cable (costs more) and dialup. Go free market! |

Fuck AOL!!!
Oh how I hate that company. I signed up with them for their 30 day free trial back in August 2000. It took me less than 1 week to decide I wanted something else. It took multiple phone calls, emails and 5 months to get the service disconnected and billings stopped. THEN, 3 years later..out of the blue...they started automatic withdrawals from my bank account for service. Every time I call and get them stopped, they start it back up a few months later. I tried having the bank manager talk to them, but that didn't help either. I explained to the jerk-offs that I deleted AOL from my computer the day I took it out of the box. I told them to check their records to see if I'd ever used their service. I told them I wanted a refund of every single charge to my account. HA!!! Not a chance. I even closed the bank account, but as soon as AOL starts up the charges again, the bank reopens the account with a negative balance..frickin' BoA. Thieving bastards ![]() Stormie

That is why you never do direct taps to a bank account to pay for anything. Credit cards, at least, give you easier options to dispute payments.

If she has properly terminated her contract with them, and they are still taking her money, causing her to get bank fees, etc., she can sue them. They would stop that shit in a second once taken to court. Unfortunately for her, there are financial barriers to filing a lawsuit. Lawyers ain't cheap, and probably aren't worth it here.

I LOATHE AOL!
It's their marketing that makes me most ill. They've always presented themselves as unique, as if ONLY they can provide you with internet access. And the linkages to other Time Warner crap are so permissive and obvious. A pox upon AOL!
