I just saw this turn of the thread, Dagney. My wife and I often worry about how we'll bear it when our Bridgid's time comes. We've had her only a couple of years, but she already runs the house...and our hearts.

I'm sorry this holiday season has been so trying for your family. I sympathize more than you can imagine.

"I'll take 'weird animals' for $1000, Alex."

"The answer is, what do you get when you cross a small dog with a rat."

"What is the little-known black-nosed Chihuarat?"

The real question is "Is he yappy?" I don't mind small dogs if they're not constantly trying to defend the homestead from everybody and everything.

He is PERFECT. He is quiet, loving, he doesn't beg, he's completely housebroken, etc..
He sleeps under the covers with me and will burrow under there on command "Happy, under covers!" and there he goes... He can "sit" "speak" "give me your paw" "down" he'll go in his crate on command, he'll jump on and off of the bed on command, he'll get his "piggy" (stuffed animal) on command, he'll drop food out of his mouth if I hold my hand under it...He went to the vet to get his heartworm test- they stick a needle in the vein and draw blood- he stood up all proud like a big boy, didn't flinch, didn't try to get away...He is PERFECT.
(probably because when I got him I was 19, stuck in a bad marriage in south texas where I knew noone, unemployed, and I didn't have anything better to do than read dog books and train the dog, and noone better to love than the dog.) It really paid off, though. One thing I don't like about him is that he shakes when he's nervous and it distracts me and if I tell him to stop, he shakes more, but other than that, no complaints.

NO, I don't. I treat him like a big dog, I don't carry him around and dress him like a baby. He thinks he's a big boy. He'll even walk through snow to go out and pee.
He grew up with a rottweiler and he was the dominant dog, but he knows I'M the top dog. If I want to trim his nails, he sits still and he never even thinks about biting me- I taught him that when he was a puppy "you DON'T bit your MAMA!!!" He figured that out really quick. He wants to please me, so all I have to do is look at him wrong and he gets the message.
DO NOT judge all chihuahuas by this one! Most of them really are yappy little brats, but it's about how their owners treat them, how they are raised, and whether or not they are allowed to act like little brats or not. For some reason, most people treat chis like spoiled infants, and the dogs are awful.

He's adorable, Stacy! I never really liked Chihuahuas until my boyfriend got one. We found her running around on a busy street--I think she's mostly Chihuahua, but might have something else in her too. Anyway, she's the coolest little dog. She loves to cuddle up in your lap, and isn't yappy at all (although she does whine a bit when we leave the house, but I think that's separation anxiety...). A co-worker at my old job had two Chihuahuas who were terrors--they were so annoying. I think a lot of it has to do with how they're raised. You're right, people baby them too much.
