They (the buses) are all so clean and shiny now. Just wait until February, with the salt and sand and dirty clumps of frozen slush hanging underneath.

Oh yeah -ours picks them up on a dirt road. Once the potholes appear, we don't see the yellow for mud......
...of course by then it's picking them up in the dark, so we don't see the mud either.....

Seeing pictures of kids on the buses reminds of this weekend. SonofV and his cousin-in-crime wanted to go to the local skate park. I said yes, and since they had their own way there this time, that was the last I heard of it. They were going to call me when they were done for a ride home (approx 1.5 miles). While they were there, I thought, hmm, this would be a good time to go get some candid shots of the two of them. There are plenteous pictures of the both of them, but not so many truly candid ones where they're oblivious to the camera. Plus, I would have the chance at action shots, having fun shots, no parents shots. A real photo-op for a camera-happy parent. Then I stopped cold. I imagined what I would look like trying to get "candid" shots of little boys. The words "Bad Idea" rang loudly in my head. The more inconspicuous I tried to be the creepier I would look. I don't have some honkin football sideline gazillion millimeter zoom lens, just a point and shoot. I could have just brazened it out, stood right at the bowl's edge and snapped away, and that would have been a different kind of embarrassing, mostly for my kid. But the hope for a truly candid shot was pretty much out. When I see these pictures of kids loading onto the bus, I **know** they were taken by proud parents. But just as I don't know all the parents standing around also taking pictures, they don't all know me. And that worries some people. I have actually been shooed away from taking pictures of my kid on the playground. What a world. [/hijack]

I'd say to hell with it. If someone actually approaches you, it's not like you don't have a reason to be there. That being said, I'd probably not do it either...

There have been a few times that I thought it would be cool to have the camera at the pool. But even though it's a membership type place, it's still pretty public and I think it wouldn't fly.

I brought the digital cam and took lots of pictures of the pup during her first few private swim lessons at the local municipal pool this spring. They were during normal swimming hours in the the evenings. No one said anything to me...and I didn't notice anyone making a big deal about it. *shrug* I didn't even give it a second thought. I was more worried about looking like a crazy shutter-happy parent than a pedophile, but I'm female.

Male vs Female makes a big big difference.
I coach soccer for a couple different age groups. some of my players have gone on to play at club level around the area. I have been known to pop up at games to take pics of the kids that have moved on. I put them together with pics from our previous teams then give them to the kids and their parents. Kind of a "look at the progress" kind of thing. Dorky, yes, but fun. Anyway, I was approached by two very stern looking fathers at one game who grilled me over what I was doing. They knew I wasn't a team parent and they thought I might be a perve. One of my former player's parents cleared up the confusion, but it was a sad, enlightening experience. I still get looks at tournaments when I'm taping ankles for some of the kids, and stuff like that. People are very suspicious - and they should be, but it is hard for a non-pervert to operate effectively with that level of suspicion.

l123 -- bingo.
Sad and true. I have had the same experiences. Little league, not soccer though. I can be known to my kid's teachers. I can be known to some/most of the administration of the school. But I can't be known to all the security staff, all the volunteers, all the lunchroom/playground/library adults... orthodoc recently posted a terribly sad story about his kid's teacher. wtf?! How can you simultaneously have an appropriate level of skepticism and concern and still give these unknown (to me, and I to them) adults access to my child? This is a question I do not have a ready, repeatable answer to. Appearances are no help. Picture taking behavior is no indicator. I can feel another thread coming on....
