Newspaper rules are made for typeprinting conventions and to conserve space in narrow columns, and I don't consider them applicable to other forms of writing.
I also reject and resent the idea that being interested in or careful with grammar automatically makes you nerdy, nazi, or anal. In my opinion, it makes for a better communicator, and isn't clear communication essential? It's "let's make fun of the smart kids." yes, I am Hermione Granger. I have the hair to prove it!
