Today's timely coincidence:

Quote:
Guns kept at home are hurting US kids

LOADED guns left where kids can reach them may be contributing to the high level of firearms injuries to children in the US. A study this week reveals the number of such injuries is 30 per cent higher than thought.

Figures gathered from emergency rooms across the US show that around 20,000 children are injured by firearms each year - higher than earlier estimates. A further 900 incidents are fatal, says Saranya Srinivasan, a paediatrician at the Children's Hospital in Boston and co-author of the study.

The level of gun crime in the US has been falling in recent years, but firearms injuries involving children are not necessarily the result of criminal activity, says Srinivasan. For instance, 37 per cent of the children recorded in the study were hurt unintentionally. "These injuries likely could have been prevented with more careful firearm storage within the home," she says.

Some 30 million American children live in homes where there is at least one firearm. "It is important to remember that there are things we can do to prevent children from being injured with a firearm, including making sure the gun is stored unloaded and locked in a secure container," says Linda Degutis, director of the US government's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

"The safest place for a child is a home without a gun," says Robert Sege, a paediatrician at the Boston University School of Medicine. "But if you need one, have it locked up."
Absolutely. Children should be locked up whenever not in use.

The article fails to suggest whether the children should be locked inside or outside the home.

Actually, to me, the sentence suggests that it is the house that should be locked up.

More truth in that than you may think. A little over a year ago, my neighbor was shot in the back by her son. He is now locked up after the fact.

I remember you talking about that.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after students were released from Public School 298, also known as Bette Shabazz School. The students were dispersing when a gunman on a nearby rooftop opened fire on a group of rivals, police told reporters. Horton and another mother, who was also picking up children from school, were across the street at the Lucky Supermarket when the shooting started. Horton shielded several children from the bullets.
armed with what? This? Or this?

I doubt it.

But there are those that believe differently.

Let's face it. Most on here are "sheeple" who believes the government will always be there to protect them within 15-30 seconds. When in rural areas help can be 30-45 mins away.

Around here the home invasions are carefully planned around the work day so they won't inconvenience anyone. The people leave for the work day and someone puts a brick through their window, nabs a quick few things and leaves without anyone noticing (because the neighbors are at work too).

Sarge, I believe you will personally be there to protect me. I'm sure you'll manage it somehow.

UT, as I use the term, "home invasion" is when the residents are at home. If they are absent it is burglary. Is it different there?

The phrase "home invasion" is quite a new term, the same crime has existed for years under the name of aggravated burglary.

Oh and burgle (verb), burgled (past participle, adjective), burglar (personal noun). If someone uses burglarized then I'm upping them to burglarizerer.

Well then around here there are no home invasions, as long as you make it a rule to only deal with civilized people.

he smashes a window and grabs one of your kids

Now you can comment on needing a better Police force and how Society has failed this poor man all you want ,

me , at the first swing i would have been trying to get away/ run him over ,
but he lays a hand on a kid ,
POW POW POW , one less crack head
end of disscussion
I'll bet that's rare. Hasn't happened to me in 52 years. Or anyone I know, probably not you. I knew someone who had his own gun wrestled away from him and used on him, killing him. I know someone who missed his one foot by inches while target shooting.

If everyone was armed, there would be increased death due to mistaken intentions (the guy took your kid because he thought s/he was in danger) and cross fire.

I hear of home invasions occasionally in other parts of the city, but it seems rare. If they started happening all the time, more people around here might keep guns in the house. It could be that they already do keep them, just no one talks about it.

The two 'home invasions' in my neighborhood over the years resulted in the residents getting shot and killed, but word was they were drug dealers or involved in some other kind of shady business.

We have both kinds, of course, and a lot of the home invasions are related to word getting around that someone has a grow-room in their house. That and fires from amatuer wiring jobs are the main risks of cannabis, it seems.

Guns are used on Cops, too.

Quote:
plainclothes officers who heard gunfire confronted a man with a handgun on the 600 block of East Thayer Street about 12:30 a.m. and ordered him to drop the weapon, police said.

But the man pointed the gun and fired

Officials say a gunman tried to rob a woman at the Kensington section of the city Monday and shot her in the stomach. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Yes, violence against cops is all too common in Philly. They get shot at, punched, hit with cars...and even get cheesesteaks thrown at them.
