Around my way, we have trouble with 50 to 70 year old white male corporate executives squatting, raping, and pillaging - mostly pillaging. It's insidious, because they do it with such joi de vivre and that certain je ne sais quoi. It's all good, though, because they do it wearing business suits.

Mum says things like "gypsy scum" and "thieving Pakis" after working for the Police.
It's hard not to discriminate when you are personally concerned or if you hear case after case involving one section of the community.

But facts and figures do bear out that such discrimiination is not valid.

Sorry for your wife's experience.
But like Dana says, it's about complete bastards, not background.

I'll accept that some travelling people have a disregard for the concept of private property. That I have seen on multiple occasions, and over a period of years. It can go with the lifestyle. They haven't necessarily kept up with social norms, and if it on your doorstep it's probably awful. But you can't paint everyone with the same brush.

I've been friends with Paki bastards. Best cooks I ever met. And Polish immigrants - threw a party for us every Christmas. Fought in WWII too. And don't get me started on the Eye-ties who taught my Mum to cook pizza and other lovely dishes!

Then again, I'm descended from a Mick myself, so maybe I'm just a drunkard liberal with open arms

Again ... And this is just my little misguided opinion - I have never met a Roma I would trust - and yes living here I have met many in many different situations

Just as a fine point - travellers are not "gypsy"
I work in an international org with people of many different nationalities religions and have no problem with any
I do not work with - or know employed in ANY of the orgs any Roma

Here we go... Not to defend the evil suits - lord knows there are many but I think most people - certainly most women would draw some differences between actual rape and what you describe
