I love that tree behind you. Looks like a weeping cedar of some sort.

I always heard the Chinese were inscrutable, but considering the population of China, that can't be true.

Billy,
Welcome to the Cellar and USA. Many of us could learn much from your attitude, or at least how you seem to come across. Thank you for the inspiration. |

Never mind the tea, Billy. You make it over here and we'll introduce you to an American drink called moonshine.

Which MAJOR should I apply?
I will sign up the TOEFL/GMAT test soon on 20, Sep.. The problem is that I don't know which MAJOR I should apply for the USA graduate school.
Ago I want to apply the MBA program, I don't want to apply it because of the following reason: 1. The MBA job becomes hard to get because of the bad economy. 2. The cost is too high for me. 3. I cannot get the scholarship. 4. The visa is very difficult to get because the USA VISA department think I can not return China after graduation. I like to apply Finance Engineering, Urban Planning, Management... Ago I majored in Materail Engineering in my unv. time. I want to work in US for 2~3 years after fraduation to recognize the west company style. Then I come back China. I cannot give up my culture. Please show your viewpoint about major or others for me. Thank you from bottom of my heart. |

Tell us more about your skills, and tell us what interests you. What do you want to do?
Any engineering program will include a lot of math. Did you study calculus in high school? |

I was a geography and urban planning major as an undergraduate, but I never worked in the field. Found out following graduation that there was one itsy-bitsy thing that they fail to tell you in college ... planning commission jobs are usually patronage jobs, given out to people that politicians owe favors too.
Nobody owed me any favors in those days. Hmm. Nobody does now, either, at least not anybody with that kind of pull. Which of those fields interests you most?

My interests & background
I majored in the Silicate Material Engineering. I mainly stuied the ceramics, glass, cement and other inorganic materail. I have studied the calculous, linear math, statistics, physics, abiochemistry, organic chemistry... I could not learned the advanced knowledge in my field because we use the older teaching material and my teachers are not the best in the field. So I have largely read the national and foreign material in library. My GAP is not so high because I did not only learn the outdated testbooks. I think the courses are enough to use. I also took the Business Administration elective courses.
I am interested in management, finance, business, urban planning, logistics. I think I should select major according to interest and career market. I can not select too many and must concentrate on one or two majors. In China we need many people with the upper knowledge and international vision. China are implementing the new methods with reference of the west system. But we only remove your system, not master the spirit and soul. So there are many conflicts between China traditional culture and west civilization. We need balance the two sides. Many companies can not grow to the big ones. I saw many China companies died because of their management peoblems. China finance system are very distempered. We are reforming them. The urban planning gets behind the urban delepment. So the cities are disorder and off beauty. You don't need do what you major in school. Any job is ok if you can show your ability. You learn the problem resolving mothod and idea. I want to apply the graduate program entry in 2005 Fall. In the same time I hope to apply the scholarship. Or I can not afford the tuition. I don't know any professor in these fields. |

From my contacts at Binghamton University the MBA program is very popular among the Indian and Chinese students. A very low percentage of the students are American. I don't know if if that is due to competitiveness in entering the program or if MBAs are becoming less attractive in the US. I do know companies that avoid MBAs like the plague, prefering folks with technical skills. I assume you'll be returning to China so you may want to ask around. A degree in urban planning would probably be more valuable in China than the US due to societal differances.

I must think it over before I take the test.
Thank you, Griff. |
