Date Rape
I just watched an interview with Elizabeth Hoffman, President of the University of Colorado. She claimed the incidence of date rape there was as high as 1 in 4.
1/ she's full of shit 2/ I heard wrong 3/ Holy shit!! Can this possibly be an accurate figure??? |

At risk of being a smartass (like that's ever stopped me before), it depends on how you define "date," and how you define "rape." But yeah, it sounds high, even allowing for alcohol-fueled incidents, something I've had a bone to pick about for years.

Those numbers could be skewed depending on the group of people being polled. Not that it matters, one date rape is too many no matter what group.

[FLAMEBAIT]
1) "I found out the Mercedes was borrowed" ain't date rape. 2) Nor is "I thought it was a good idea at the time, but I regretted it in the morning." 3) Nor is "I consented, but I was too drunk to legally consent" -- when he was just as toasted. 4) And "He didn't pay me as agreed" ain't rape of any sort either, though it is pretty damn scuzzy. date rape
Speaking of date rape and Colorado....Did anyone happen to catch the interview of the hotel worker in Colorado by Charlie Gibson?
If not, the gist of it being; this girl goes on GMA and tells Charlie that she had waited on Kobe Bryant a number of times when he had visited CO. They had become familiar and he had then asked specifically for her each time he visited. One night he kissed her and she kissed back and then said something to the effect of...no, I have a boyfriend and you have a wife. Kobe says ok. So, she may be called as a witness. For or against I am still unclear on. I guess for his defense, saying he didn't force himself on her so why would he have forced himself on the other chick. But, doesn't it kind of show what a total asshat he is in the first place by cruising the hotel for a date? |

Judging by this small survey, it seems to me that there is a lot of gray area in the way of defining date rape:
Survey results at CU . Look at the last couple of statistics on the page and you will see what I mean. Still, it was a very small segment of the CU population. |

1 in 4 reported date rapes really are? Yeah, I'd believe that.
"But after I put the condom on him, I said no" is a pretty tough call for me. I know, that no means no, but there comes a point when he becomes deaf.

the condom blocks out the sound, remember? Covers the eye too, so you're deaf AND blind. Which explains that gargoyle in Chicago in '87

Statistics are a funny thing. As something resembling a sociologist I see statistics everyday. The first thing I ask myself "What does the person/institution stand to gain by presenting these numbers?" After that it's just a chain of information back to how it was compiled and the collated.
Most people have no idea how to interpret the statistics they are given and when you apply that fact to an emotionally charged issue like this it makes it easy to use just about any statistic to your gain. Rape is one of the most under-reported crimes. The definition of rape is also in something of a state of flux. Date rape, spouse rape, non-consensual sex while under the influence, rufies, changing your mind in the middle of the act, not everybody is on the same page as to what constitutes rape.

![]() I'm grabbing a Criminal Justice degree while I'm in, there is an almost 2/3 overlap in the curriculum of each course, so it would be a waste to not do so. There are a lot of disparate but not necessarily antagonistic ideas rattling around in my head. Now I'm learning the tools to turn it into something approaching understandable and useful. Ethics, Social Problems, Statistics, Psychology, Anthropology all kinds of courses to help me put word and form to ideas that I hope will be functional and implementable.

Eh, I've seen a lot of info regarding that report, and I feel that it's greatly exaggerated. The questionaire they had these ladies fill out had a few very, very broad/vague questions. Things like, "Have you ever been in a sexual situation that ended up going farther than you expected?" .... or .... "Have you ever had a sexual encounter that you wish hadn't happened at some later point?" If they answered yes to any question, then they were added to the "date-rape" category.
Hello? Who *hasn't* had those experiences, male or female? There have been plenty of times where you intend to only get to a certain point sexually, but the heat-of-the-moment ends up carrying you along. Yeah, later you kinda wish it wouldn't have happened, but if you really wanted you coulda stopped it at any time. And c'mon now, you're in college. Most kids have a few drunken hook-ups. The next day you may regret it, but the night before you were just movin right along with the flow. I think we need to focus on education of kids in regards to personal responsibility. I'm sorry Susan, but if you wear a tube-top and an ulta mini-skirt, go to a frat party, and then drink a fifth of rum, then there's a very real chance that you might wake up in the morning wondering why the hell you just slept with a Jim Belushi look-alike. Learn some self-control. Learn personal responsibility. If you drive yourself to the middle of downtown Detroit at 3am all alone, get out and start waving fist-fulls of cash around, I'm not going to feel sorry for you if you're robbed. You have some control of the situations you place yourself in. We've generated this society where we teach the youth that it's OK to act completely trashy, slutty, and get blitzed out of your head. And when, omigosh, the situation got a little too carried away we're going to call it rape? Whatever. Reserve "rape" for the women are forced against their will into a situation. Not a dumb freshman sorority chick who drank too much then lost her panties in the morning. |
